: ] The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, March 7, 2001 JOtudent artwork unveiled 8 J Laura Vodzak, a Dallas junior, walks off with Best in Show award at Rosetti exhibit By SANDY PEOPLES Post Correspondent DALLAS - The MacDonald Art Gallery at College Misericordia in Dallas provided the setting for the 20th annual Suzanne Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried Art Show and Winners’ Exhibit opening reception on Sunday, March 4. The exhibit features 345 pieces of art created by students who live and/or study in Dallas, Lake-Lehman, Tunkhannock and Northwest school districts. There are separate categories in each of the six grade levels, sev- en through 12. More than 900 pieces of art work were judged “We are all impressed with the tremendous quality of the art work.” Sue Hand Exnigit sponsor B55 for the event. The judges were: Michelle Christopher, Brett Gauntlett, Cindy Jones, Michell Lord, Nancy Norkaitis and An- gelique Prevost. Louise Rossetti, mother of the late Suzanne Rossetti, arrived from the Boston area to be part of this annual exhibit. Sue Hand, local artist and private in- structor, and her husband, Joe, have sponsored this event since its inception 20 years ago. Their daughter, Heather Madeira, served as the event coordinator. “We think it's wonderful that so many people came out on such a snowy day to support our youth,” said Madeira. Laura Vodzak, a Dallas junior, won several awards including the Peter Rossetti Memorial Award for Best of Show. Laura has been studying under the watchful eye of Sue Hand for 13 years. “I am very excited and happy to win the Best of Show award,” she said. “I have put a lot of myself into my work this year, and I'm thankful to Mrs. Hand for her guidance and support.” Laura’s mother and father, Ann and John Vodzak, smiled “We are all impressed with the tremendous quality of the art work,” said Hand. “Our students have reached new heights this year. There is a lot of talent in this area, and we are proud of these kids. They are the hope for the future.” Some of the awards received by the students are: Paul J. LaBar Memorial Awards for Best of Grade Level: R. J. Tomascik, 7th grade; Rachel Chin, 8th grade; Jill Szustak, 9th grade; Christina Lumbis, 10th grade; Laura Vodzak, 11th grade; Brook Krys- ton, 12th grade. The Larish & LaBar Awards for “Triple Blue Society” - (Three as they spoke of their daughter and her talent. “We are very proud of her,” said Mrs. Vodzak. They were both pleased to help their daughter display her work for the many people who wanted to take pictures of this remark- able young lady and her artistry. The exhibit continues from March 13 through March 29. It is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon until 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from noon until 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. A 14 page booklet containing all of the awards and winners is available at the exhibit. Legion will meet March 8 Mikielski running for Prothonotary Barbara Mikielski has an- nounced her candidacy for Pro- thonotary of Luzerne County. A registered Republican, Mikielski has 15 years experience using court house records of 13 Penn- sylvania counties. She is the ad- ministrator for Wyoming Valley Abstract Company. In a press statement, she said her knowl- edge of the title insurance in- dustry and the valuable re- sources contained in the Pro- thonotary’s Office, combined with a desire to serve the public have resulted in a candidacy dedicated to preserving, main- taining and streamlining records. Mikielski is a graduate of Lake-Lehman High School, the Pennsylvania State University and has continued her educa- tion through classes at Luzerne County Community College, Small Business Development Center and Leadership Wilkes- Barre, Class of 2000. She is a li- censed title insurance agent for the state of Pennsylvania, Notary Public and is co-chairperson of the Pennsylvania Land Title As- sociation Northeast Chapter. She is a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 241, Lehman, member of the Leadership Wilkes-Barre Alumni Council, Greater Federated Women's Club - Harvey's Lake, member and volunteer for the Back Mountain Business and Profes- sional Association, Maple Grove United Methodist Church and its Sunday School. Mikielski resides in Lehman Township with her husband Jer- ry and their children, Hope and April Eaton, Jerry Jr. and An- drew Mikielski and Lorie, Greg and Jessica Mikielski of Hanover Township. .
