«ld The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, February 28, 2001 3 Bowler (continued from page 1) resident of West Palm Beach, Florida. “I'm getting ready to go on another tour now. We leave on April 10 for three weeks. We're going to Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila. I have to stay in shape to keep up with that kind of schedule. In fact, I have to keep in shape because the oth- er bowlers all do.” Davis has bowled with some very important people throughout the years. “I bowled in the White House with Richard Nixon watch- ing and also in the Playboy Man- sion in Chicago. When we were in Japan many years ago, the em- peror’s wife, brother and son came and watched us bowl about eight games. That son who was just a young boy at the time is now the Emperor of Japan.” The stories are plentiful. “It's the unusual things that really make it interesting. Like the time I was in Jakarta, Indonesia. We flew for 29 hours to get there, stayed for five days during which time we bowled for the president. Then we flew home. It was pretty exhausting. A month later there was an uprising there and the president was ousted. He seemed like a nice guy but I guess he was really quite a crook.” The pro tour has taken Davis back to his roots, also. “Back in 1993 or 1994, we played a tour- nament in Wilkes-Barre. In fact, » Ronnie Wenger bowled a 300 game on television. That doesn’t happen a lot,” Davis said. “My daughter was attending the University of Pittsburgh at the time, so she came to Wilkes- Barre. We stayed for a few days and I showed her all around. We drove out to Harveys Lake, and past the old farmhouse and the store in Sweet Valley where I lived before my family moved to Arizona. It was really strange to see a Burger King where our Lit- tle League field had been. Things changed but that's supposed to happen. In fact the store is now an attorney's office.” Davis has two daughters who both live near his sister in Geor- gia. He also has two grandchil- dren. “I showed the article to my sister, Jean, and we both agree. We don't think it's fair that Roger Bellas looks as good as he does. You're supposed to change as you age but he looks just the same,” Davis joked. They were part of a group of boys who were good friends and played Little League Baseball together. “Bob Phillips, Ross Steinhauer, Hamilton Clemow, Dave and I played together for Fernbrook. We were a close-knit group,” said Roger Bellas. “Barry Landmasser and Ronnie Clemow were there, too. There were three Steinhauer ® others and their father was 1 BiLo 0il Co. 4 also involved with the league.” Frank Hemingway was one of the coaches according to Davis who also said, “Tommy Hislop, Donnie Bellas and Tommy Bupstas played with us, too.” Roger Bellas now lives in Cen- Call around for prices - then make us your last call! Dave lived in the last house in Luzerne County on Demund’s Road.” Davis fondly enjoyed his touch with the past. “This is a real thrill to have The Dallas Post do an ar- ticle about me. I guess it means that I've finally made it,” he said. Davis, who said he doesn’t miss the snow or the cold winters, shouldn't have to worry about that when he returns to Pennsyl- vania this year. “I'll be back in the spring for a tournament in Sink- ing Springs.” That's the best time of year to enjoy the sights and sounds of over 1,100 youngsters playing on the five fields of the Back Mountain Baseball League. h, Fea Lake-Lehman grade 7-8 honor roll Mr. John C.
