The chil- dren were animated. Hands were flying as they talked about com- puter games, baseball, dancing and their parents and siblings. ® The residents sat serenely, en- joying the energy of the younger | generation. They could often be seen laughing, clapping, and patting the kids on their backs in gratitude. More than once se- niors made remarks along the lines of “we walked to school up- i hill,” or “in my day we didn’t | have such wonderful things.” “Our plan is to come back in the spring to put on a play for the residents,” Traver said. The activities room at the Lakeside Nursing Center was, for a time, transformed into a royal courtyard for the newly crowned king and queen of the Valentine's Day celebration. Residents, staff, family members and friends applauded as Jean Stang, Activities Director, placed crowns upon their heads. Mr. Foss is 90 years old and is from Sweet Valley. Mrs. King is 102 and is a former resident of Lehman. “It feels wonderful be- ing queen for the day,” said Mrs. King. Mr. Foss smiled at his son, who was across the room, and said to one of the nurses, “will you go ask my son, the prince, if he feels like royalty?” The residents were pleased to have a very special little prince at the party. Cahil Carey, who is 4 years old, was also the object of attention. His mother brought him to Lakeside to deliver Valen- tine’s placemats made for the residents by his preschool class at the Trinity Learning Center. He was persuaded to pose for a picture with resident Alice Nor- fords who is 88 years old. Cahil said he had fun making the placemats with his classmates. Young Cahil, or C.J. as he is known about the center, is no stranger to celebrating special events with his senior friends. His grandmother, Janet Carey, is the dietitian supervisor at Lakeside. “C.J. comes to many of our holiday parties,” said Mrs. Carey. “He is a familiar face around here. Our residents have watched him grow up, and as you can see, everybody loves POST PHOTO/SANDY PEOPLES May King and Clifford Foss, wearing crowns to signify their status as Valentine's Queen and King at Lakeside Nursing Center. ”» him. The annual Valentine's Day party was put together by the staff under the direction of Mrs. Stang. “This is a nice event for our residents,” she said. “and a wonderful experience for every- one.” Sandy Maneval, the direc- tor of nursing, said, “we've made a family atmosphere here for our residents, and we try to do spe- cial things for them for all of the holidays.” : “We really enjoy having com- pany,” said Mrs. Stang. “We wel- come individuals or groups who would like to come in to sing, play musical instruments, or just spend some time visiting with our seniors.” Alice Norfords and Cahil Carey, with a placemat made for the resi- dents.
