6 Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 31, 2001 Rossett1 Memorial art contest to be held All area students in grades 7-12 are invited to enter the 20th Anu- al Suzanne Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried Art Contest. Joe and Sue Hand of Dallas sponsor the contest in memory of the daughter of Leouise and the latePeter Rossetti of Saugus, MA. Entries must be delivered to Sue Hand's Imagery at 35 Main St., Dallas, between Feb. 5 and 21. Ribbons will be awarded in 12 differ- ent categories on each separate grade level by two panels of three judges each. In addition, a separate awards jury will assign many community-sponsored cash awards and gift certificates. The categories will include: pencil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, ink, scratchboard, mixed media, fibers, photography, prints, and miniature drawings and paintings. Photographs must be at least 8” x 10”. No entry may exceed 40” in any direction, frame and/or mat included. All 2-D entries must be mounted, matted, or framed, with a hanger on the back, except for works on canvas board or stretched canvas, and must be accompa- nied by an entry form, available from area school art teachers or at Sue Hand's Imagery. Each student may submit a total of three en- tries. The public is invited to the opening reception of the Rossetti Memorial Art Show on Sunday, Mar. 4 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Mac- Donald Art Gallery at College Misericordia. An awards ceremony will follow at 4 p.m. The exhibit of winning art work will continue from Mar. 13 - 29. Lo- cal first-place winners are eligible to compete at district and state levels for scholarships. Fred Templin is contest chairman. A buffet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. to judge and recognize the winners of the essay contest. There will be three awards: first place ($200), second place ($150), and third place ($100) in savings bonds. American Legion Post Adjutant Thomas Reese will present each winner with a Senatorial citation. All members of the Dallas American Legion are invited to attend this breakfast meeting. Local equestriennes honored The Northeastern Pennsylvania Horsemen's Association held its an- nual awards banquet in which three local youth were honored. Jo- celyn Eckman is the year-end champion in the 1st Year Short Stir- rup Division. This is the second year in a row that Jocelyn has been champion in the division in which she competed. AJ Pugh won 5th place in the Short/Long Stirrup Hunter Class and Maria Gubbiotti won 1st place in Introductory Level Dressage, 2nd place in Training Level Dressage, and received a certificate for Trail Riding. American Legion to hold annual pig roast The Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post 672 will hold its 41st annual pig roast on Saturday, Feb. 3. The chefs don’t roast a whole pig any more, but the menu still includes roast pork, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, dessert, and beverages. Dining will be from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. to easy-listen- ing music by the Starfire Band. St. Paul’s/Prince of Peace Full Communion On the eve of the Feast of Epiphany, Jan. 5, St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Shavertown and Prince of Peace Episcopal Church of Dallas joined together to celebrate the two national churches coming together in Full Communion. The two congregations celebrated the occasion with the Holy Eucharist at Prince of Peace. Pastor Charles Grube, left, of St. Paul's, preached; and Father Robert Nagy, right, of Prince of Peace, was the chief celebrant. During the service, Fa- ther Nagy and Pastor Grube exchanged the prayer books of each tradition — the 1979 Book of Common Prayer and The Lutheran Book of Worship. A festive reception followed, coordinated by the Episcopal Church Women and contributed to by both congregations. Flu Vaccines Available from the VNA The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), an affiliate of the Wyoming Valley Health Care System, will continue to provide flu vaccines to interested members of the public. Health experts agree the vaccine is the best way to avoid the flu and recommend it for the elderly and those expecting exposure to the virus. Current VNA patients can receive the vaccine by asking a visiting nurse; the Nurses’ Care program can also provide vaccines to patients, and they are also available at the VNA office by appointment.
