X-ray artist to speak, show work at Misericordia Radiologic Technologist William Conklin had an unusual hobby; X-ray art. Over the years, he expanded his interest, and is now recognized as an expert in radiography, photography and conchol- ogy for his strikingly beautiful color photos and radiographs of sea shells, which have been displayed at the Smithsonian and science museums throughout the world. Radiologic Technology Week, Conklin will speak at College Misericordia’s Banks Student Center on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. A meet the artist reception will follow, and his unusual photographs will be on display, The program is {ree and open to the public. Conklin, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, has photographed shells from South Carolina and around the world. People of all ages and cultures are naturally attracted to the beauty of sea shells, and through his X-ray photos Conklin has uncovered another dimen- sion of their elegance. His images reveal in ghostly detail the spirals and geometrics that make up the intricate inner structure of the shells. When displayed adjacent to a color photo of the same shell, the similarities and contrasts add to the enjoyment of the X-ray print. Conklin’s art has been recognized by state, national and interna- tional newspapers and magazines, and he has been featured on television. He has received a fellowship in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, a distinction held by fewer than 100 technologists in the country, as well as many other awards. He has published two books of his work, Nature's Art: the Inner and Outer Dimensions of the Shell and Inner Dimensions: The Radiographic World of William Conklin, and has contributed to other publications including the National Geographic Society's A World of Things to Do. Registered radiologic technologists can earn two continuing education points for attending Conklin’s lecture. Cost for the continuing education points is $15.
