Shape note singing at Prince of Peace The Endless Mountain Shape Note Singers meet on Sunday, Oct. 8, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Main St., Dallas, off Rt. 309. The a cappella singing of four part shape note music will use the Sacred Harp, a collection of sacred songs, and anthems, published continu- ously since 1844. (loaner copies will be available.) The music was originally written in shapes to accommodate those who could not read standard musical nota- tion. An important part of the musi- cal tradition is for the singers to be seated in a hollow square, and to first sing the selected piece through using the syllables of the shape notation before singing the words. The Endless Mountains Shape Note Singers welcome sing- ers of all levels of experience. The singing emphasizes community rather than choral singing, and there is less concern for blending of voices Shape note singers gather for enjoyment, not in preparation for performance. There is no admis- sion, and no need to proficiently read music. Mr.Guy Bankes will lead a singing school to explain the basics of shape note singing.
