Hurwitz, son of 4 ® Stephen and Linda Hurwitz of Shavertown, has been awarded the 2000-2001 American Meteorologi- cal Society/Office of Naval Re- search Graduate Fellowship. With the fellowship, Hurwitz will pur- sue a Ph.D in meteorology at The Pennsylvania State University. The AMS/Industry/Govern- ment fellowship program, now in its tenth year, attracts promising young scientists to prepare for ca- reers in the atmospheric and re- lated oceanic and hydrologic sci- ences. The program recruits prom- ising young people entering their first year of graduate study, from a wide range of interests: meteorol- ogy, physics, mathematics, hydrol- ogy, oceanography, marine science, computer science, and engineer- ing. The graduate fellowship which carries a nine-month, $15,000 sti- pend, is one of 19 awarded by the AMS, four major high-technology firms, and six federal agencies. Hurwitz recently graduated from Williams College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. While an undergraduate, he received the chemistry achievement award for excellence in organic chemistry, among other awards. Hurwitz is primarily interested in severe weather phenomena. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) coordinates, executes, and promotes the science and technol- ogy programs of the United States Navy and Marine Corps through universities, government labora- tories, and nonprofit and for-profit organizations. QUALITY * AFFORDABILITY * RESULTS! ‘Red Hot' group wins awards The dance group "Red Hot" recently attended the Performing Arts Alliance Talent competition held in King of Prussia. Red Hot won first place trophies in the group tap and specialty categories along with second place in line pantomime and third place in group pantomime. Red Hot was also one of the top three highest scoring groups to attend the competition. Over 900 dancers attended the competition weekend from various cities and states. Red Hot is a dance group under the instruction of Robert and Kristine Oberst, owners and operators of the Back Mountain Dance Studio, Dallas. 'Back to school’ nights at Wycallis On Thursday, September 14, first grade parents at Wycallis Elemen- tary will be introduced to the Parent Teacher Organization Board and meet their child's teacher and the teachers of special subject, art, music and health /physical education at 7 p.m. in the school gymna- sium. After a short meeting parents will move to their child's classroom for a session with the classroom teacher. Refreshments will be served in the cafeteria after the meeting. Second and third grade parents are scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, September 21. Back to School Night for fourth and fifth grade parents will be Thursday, September 28, at 7 p.m. : L-L Parents' Field Hockey meeting Sept. 14 The Lake-Lehman Parents’ Field Hockey Association will hold its, monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. 'All about me' celebration September 12 The All About Me celebration assembly will take place on Sept. 12 at 9:15 a.m.at the Wycallis Elementary school. Students are invited to wear clothing, badges, uniforms etc. which demonstrate who they are and what they are interested in. Some students will design T-shirts or paper bag vests, which they will decorate. The All About Me assembly will feature: a choral reading of the No Taunting Pledge, and a recognition of students who met the summer reading challenge. Urban will attend national young leaders conference Joseph Urban of Dallas has been selected to attend The National Young Leaders | Conference (NYLC) from Oc- tober 10 to Octo- ber 15, in Wash- ington D.C." The NYLC is a unique leadership devel- opment program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholas- tic merit. Urban will be among 350 outstanding National Scholars from around the country to attend the conference. The theme of the NYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout the six-day. conference, Urban will in- teract with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the me- dia and the diplomatic corps. Urban will meet with prominent journalists as well as senators and representatives or an appointed Joseph Urban member of their staff to discuss important issues facing the na- tion. To complement the schedule of special meetings and briefings, Urban will also participate in a number of leadership skill-build- ing activities. The CYLC is a nonprofit, non- partisan educational organization. Founded in 1985, it is committed to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leader- ship potential. Urban, a Dallas High School junior, is a high honors student, a two-time NEDT award recipient, and a member of various school clubs. Urban is currently president of the Dallas High School Environ- mental Club. He lectors and teaches CCD at Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas, and is employed part-time by the Meadows Nursing Center as an activities assistant. Urban is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Urban, Jr., Dallas, and the grandson of Mrs. Mary M. Cleary, Kingston. Back to school night at L-L High Lake-Lehman High School's 2000 Back to School Night will be held on Monday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Parents will follow their child's schedule which will be divided into eight, 10 minute intervals, begin- ning promptly at 7 p.m. with a five minute period in between each class in order to meet their teach- ers and have the opportunity to receive an overview of the material that will be covered. Two special sessions will also be held in the auditorium regarding Lake-Lehman's state mandated "senior projects". All seniors are required to complete a major project in order to graduate from high school and must present their experience to members of their faculty /community during a se- nior interview. The first informa- tion session will run from 8 to 8:30 p-m. with the second session to follow immediately, concluding at 9 p.m. A brief description of the senior project will be presented followed by a question and answer period.
