"The Great Bear Trio’ opens contra dances The Chicory House and the Folklore Society will open their ninth season of New England Contra dances with the energetic Binghamton area band “Tribu- tary.” The dance takes place Saturday Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. at St. Therese’s Church, Pioneer Ave. and Davis St., Shavertown. The dance is a form of American tra- ditional dancing that is moderately aero- bic, multi generational, and fun for danc- ing, watching, or listening. There are always experienced dancers ready to help along hesitant dancers, and also quite a few dancers trying the experi- ence for the first time. The Great Bear Trio, from Fulton NY, is a contra dance band made up of a very musical family. Andrew Kellogg VanNorstrand (age 12) plays lead and harmony fiddles with his brother Noah. Noah (age 11) also plays backup on the mandolin, guitar and various drums as well as different percussion instruments (including the kazoo). The boys’ mother, Kim, plays a solid and inventive style of piano. Together, the Great Bear Trio performs an energetic blend of tradi- tional and contemporary contra dance music from New England, Ireland, French-Canada, and the U.S.A. Dancers of all ages, including chil- dren, are welcome. Dancers are encour- aged todress in lightweight, casual cloth- ing, and soft-soled, non-marking shoes. A few waltzes and square dances are also usually part of any evening of con- tra dancing. Bob Nicholson from the Syracuse area will be calling and teaching. Newcomers are made to feel at home easily, as the caller teaches each dance before the music begins and also leads the dance figures while they are being done to music. The Chicory house is an all- volunteer non-profit coffeehouse, spon- soring folk music and dance in the Wyo- ming Valley. Admission is S6 for adults and $15 for families. Dancers are asked to bring a snack to share at intermis- sion. The dances are held the second Saturday of each month. Further infor- mation is available at 333-4007.
