The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 9, 2000 5 Public invited to Shavertown Fire Dept.'s birthday bash By M.B. GILLIGAN Post Correspondent SHAVERTOWN-The Shavertown Fire Department will celebrate its 75th Anniversary on Sat., Aug. 12. "We're putting on a big block party,” said Jerry Paxton, fire department president. “We're going to have a parade at 12 p.m. that will travel up the Memorial Highway from Old Main Street to Franklin Street.” : The section of Main Street right in front of the fire hall will be blocked off during the day's ac- tivities. "We're going to have lots of booths for food and games set up in that block,” said Paxton. “We'll open them up right after the parade.” A special memorial ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. in front of the fire hall. “Senator Charles Lemmond and Representative Phyllis Mundy will be present at the ceremony,” said Paxton. “In addition to some other things we have planned for the service, we will hand out one very special award. We want to keep that as a surprise, though,” he added. Committee members for the event are Paxton, Kathy Hospoder and Ricky Taddei. “We've been working on the details since the spring, but we've really had a big push over the last two months,” Paxton explained. “The three of us are the committee co-chairper- sons, but we've had lots of help from many other people,” he said. "We have about 35 active firefighters and most of them are involved in one way or another.” Fire Chief Gary Beisel agreed - planning the celebration has been a group effort. “We have the three main committees,” Beisel said. “But there are others working on each of those committees. We've had a lot of help getting it all set up.” The food and game booths, which will be closed during the ceremonies, will be staffed by firefighters and the Ladies Auxil- iary. “We'll have games for the children like a basketball shoot, a loppy-pop tree and a duck pond. We'll also have a Big Six Wheel,” said Paxton. "The Ladies Auxil- iary will have a white elephant booth and we're going to have a bake sale and raffle. Hillside Farms ice cream truck will also be there.” Some other special activities are also scheduled for the big day. "We're going to have bag pipe music and a demonstration of the bag pipes,” said Beisel. “We've also made arrangements with Nu York Productions to have a dee- jay spinning records from 7 to 11 pn” The Shavertown Fire Depart- ment dates back to 1925 when a meeting was first held to discuss its formation. “On May 9, 1925, Jacob Rau was elected as the first president and Albert Bush be- came the first fire chief,” Paxton said. “In addition to some other things we have planned Jor the service, we will hand out one very special award. We want to keep that as a surprise, though.” ~~ demy Paxton Pres., Shavertown Fire Dept. “The biggest fire we ever had was when the Back Mountain Lumber and Coal Company burnedin 1961,” said Chief Beisel, who served in that capacity for 19 years. “The fire company then made a deal with Granville Sowden, owner of the lumber com- pany. They needed a wedge of our property to square up their new building with the road. In ex- change for the land, and to thank the fire department for its work during the fire, Mr. Sowden built a new fire house. That's why the , brick-face matches on these two buildings,” said Beisel. Shavertown is a volunteer fire department. Volunteers are al- ways needed and not just for fire fighting. There are many other duties and responsibilities required to keep a volunteer fire department in operation. Recruiting new fire fighters and fundraising are on- going activities. If you are inter- ested in volunteering some of your time, just call your local fire de- partment. They'll be glad to hear from you.
