The Dallas Pos Section 2 July 5, 2000 Sports ® Giants top Tigers 6-2 for Major League championship Winners were 16-3 going into playoffs, NL champions The Giants captured the Na- tional Division title with a 16-3 record before taking the overall title with a 6-2 win over the Tigers. Going into the playoffs the Giants defeated the Pirates 8-7 and ad- vanced into the second round and defeated the Phillies in four in- nings, 11-0. Going into the play- off game, the Giants were facing the Tigers, coached by Bruce Goeringer. The Tigers were co- division champs along with the Orioles. The Giants started Eric Domzalski on the mound. The Tigers countered with Adam King. After the first inning the Giants led 1-0 with Eric Domzalski scor- ing on an RBI double by David Harding. The second inning was score- less for both teams. The Tigers erupted for two runs in the top of the third inning, scoring Justin Orlandini and Brian Goeringer on an RBI double by Brian Feliccia. The Giants countered in the bot- tom of the inning with three of their own runs with Nick Samanas hitting a double to score David Harding and Mike Zaleskas, an RBI single scored Nick Samanas and Kyle Mahle. At the end of the inning it was Giants 4, Tigers 2. The Giants scored again in the fourth inning on an RBI Single by Eric Domzalski, scoring Doug Harding and David Orrson. Eric Domzalski and David Harding combined for the Giants win by striking out 17 Tigers. The game was the last for Gi- ants manager Dave Domzalski, who coached three sons through Little League. He was assisted this season by coaches John Sulawski, Geoff Fishel, Joe Kustrin and Mike Zaleskas. “Most of all I would like to thank all 12 players on the Giants team,” Domzalski said. “They worked so hard all season with their dedica- tion, drive and enthusiasm. [ hated to see the season end.” The White Sox, who finished the regular season as Major League Softball champs with a record of 11-1, also won the Major League Softball Playoff Championship by a score of 4- 2 over the Red Sox on Satur- day. The White Sox jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice bunt by Maggie Guntli, scoring Jes- sica English. The White Sox scored two more in the second and almost broke the game wide open. With the bases loaded and one out Sheree Horvath ripped a line drive that Red Sox shortstop Ali Kowalchak snared with a leap and turned into a double play. The Red Sox came back with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning with the big hit being a double play by Sara Swepston. Clinging to a 3-2 lead the White Sox scored an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with Maggie Guntli again bunting in Sheree Horvath. The Red Sox made one more attempt in the top of the sixth but a running catch by center fielder Amanda Musto and a good play by third baseman Becca Banks retired the first two Red Sox. Jessica Jones got a two out hit for the Red Sox but winning pitcher Sheree Horvath struck out the last batter for the championship. Both pitchers were out- standing. Red Sox pitcher Sara Sweptston allowed only four hits and struck out 10, while White Sox pitcher Sheree Horvath also allowed only four hits while striking out 12 and walking only one. On Friday the White Sox beat the Cardinals by a score of 5-1 in the semi-finals while the Red Sox beat the Dodgers 3-0. White Sox win softball title Bob Horlacher Brewers 10; Bk. Mt. Dodgers 0 Laura DeSoo had a triple & a single. Aubrey Kupstas, Courtney Novajosky, Amanda Szczucki and Molly Kalish each had a single and an rbi. Heather McDonald also had a single and 2 rbi’s. The final record for Bob Horlacher Brewers was 10 wins and 2 losses. Aaron Katyl first in KPGA qualifier Aaron Katyl of Dallas shot 42 and tied for first place in a Keystone Public Golf Association junior qualifier, held June 27 at Cherry Valley Golf Course in Stroudsburg. The event had to be shortened due to severe weather. The next KPGA Junior Qualifier is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11 at Mill Race Golf Course in Benton. Jordan wins Victory Run Travis Jordan, a native of Trucksville, won the second annual Harveys Lake Victory Run on Saturday, June 24. Jordan, a family physician, ran the 8.1 mile course in 43 minutes and 40 seconds. The proceeds of the run benefit Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
