2000 Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction Section July 5, 2000 Back down to earth, Sue Hand is thinking big Sue Hand is thinking big for this year's auction, really big. “Because it’s the year 2000, I want to do the largest auction painting I've ever done,” said the well- known artist and enthusiastic supporter of the library. Recent auction paintings have been done on 22" by 30” paper, Hand said. This year, she plans to use paper that measures 28.5” by 40”. Then there's the frame. Sue's husband Joe puts the finishing touches on each year’s artwork, a job that takes four or five hours and must be done in time for the led painting to be displayed before bidding opens Sunday. . Both the creation and sale of the auction painting has become a highlight of each year's event. Sue Hand starts work Thursday, continues working Friday and finishes the work Saturday. She plans to work on this one from a platform so that she has a good view of all the action. While she has painted large works before, including a few for her Millennium Collection, the prospect of finishing on a deadline is a bit daunting. “I'm a little nervous about it, but I'm going to try it.” Last year’s painting, like those in each of recentyears, setarecord, drawing a winning bid of $4,400, all of which is added to the auction tally. Sue Hand sketched a study for last year's auction painting. Sybil Pelton and Mary George have been involved with the Odds ‘'n’ Ends tent for more than 25 years, and in that time have probably seen about everything anyone could think of to donate or to buy. Looking for a little knick knack, some inexpensive jewelry, dishes, pots and pans, appliances, records, toys, ice skates, watches. You name it, they have it. Many auction-goers cruise the tent even when they don’t have anything in particular in mind to buy, and they often find something they could use or would like. Short of coffee mugs? You'll find them here, many with a distinctive name or picture on them. Picture frames are another popular item, sometimes with a print or painting included! Items on sale at Odds ‘'n’ Ends are donated by the community, but getting those items ready for sale takes work, whether it's pricing, checking to see if they're useful or cleaning. Telephones, for example, are checked to be sure they work, and if not, are marked so.
