1 The Dallas Post Section 2 May 24, 2000 Sports * Molino passes first U.S. Open qualifying test By RONALD BARTIZEK Post Staff LEHMAN - Mike Molino, who was as- sistant pro at Huntsville Golf Club for five - years before taking up tournament golf full time, won a local qualifying tourna- ment for the 2000 U.S. Open May 18. The tournament was held at Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, a short but chal- lenging par 70 layout that plays only 6,253 yards from the tips. Molino, 31, and Brian Kelly, of Montgomery, PA each shot 71 to advance to a sectional tourna- o KKapitula wins 1-0 pitchers’ duel Matt Kapitula and David Harding en- gaged in a classic pitchers’ duel as the Phillies nipped the Giants 1-0. Kapitula, who struck out 15 Giants, laced a double in the top of the 6th inning to drive home : the game's only run. The double was the only hit surrendered by Harding, who struck out 13 batters for the losers. Dodgers 18, Red Sox 7 Ronnie Shiner blasted a home run and a single to power the Dodgers offense. He was supported by Jeff Clemente, who cracked 2 doubles, and Mike Clemente, who slammed a triple BASEBALL and a single. Ben Tho- ® mas, John Giampietro and David Luksh each collected 2 singles. Giampietro and the Clemente brothers combined for 12 strikeouts for the winners. Matt Shumbris smashed a triple and a double for the Red Sox. BMT Tigers 10, A’s 0 Adam King and Justin Orlandini com- bined to strike out 10 in the process of @ shutting out the A’s. King had a double and a single while Greg Jerzak doubled and Dan Jacobs singled twice. For the A’s, Adam Singer and Jeremy Weinstock each smacked a double. Mike Rudick struck out 4 Tigers. Pirates 7, Reds 3 Alan Sheridan struck out 8 batters and collected 2 hits to lead the Pirates. Brad Fagula banged a double and 2 singles while Steve Cornia singled twice. Dodgers 12, Astros 2 Mike Clemente had 2 singles and Mike Dougherty cracked a double to propel the Dodgers to victory. Ben Thomas and John Giampietro combined to strike out 4 Astros. Jon Janerich smacked a double in a losing cause. % Dodgers 9, Rangers 0 Ronnie Shiner drilled a home run and 2 singles in addition to allowing only 1 hit and collecting 3 strikeouts on the mound for the Dodgers. Mike Clemente singled 3 times and brother Jeff Clemente slashed a triple. Mike Dougherty had 2 singles while Kevin Hosseini slammed a double and a single. Joe Bailey struck out 4 for the Rang- ers. @Giants 14, A’s 1 Nick Samanas crushed a home run and Adam Sulewski collected 2 singles to lead the Giants. Giants 6, Cardinals 1 Kyle Mahle struck out 6 in tossing the complete game for the winners. Mahle also smacked a double: Mark Covert singled twice and Mike @ >Stolarick doubled for the Cardinals. Stephen Yankowski and Dylan Seeley combined to strike out 7 for the losers. Phillies 8, Orioles 4 Brandon Wills and Matt Kapitula each belted 3 hits as the Phillies defeated the Orioles. Ryan Konopki added a double to the Phillies attack. Konopki and Wills combined to strike out 12 batters. For the Orioles, Tom Parrish collected a double and a single. He credits his coach, John Kulhamer, for much of his success. “He taught me how to play,” Molino said, and he still seeks advice from his long- time coach. Molino gave up his pro shop job last year to devote full time to tournament golf. He played on the South Florida Tour from January to April, and plans to re- turn to the state in June to play on the “A lot of swirling winds . Mike Molino lehman Golden Bear Tour. Both circuits play on courses within a couple of hours of West Palm Beach, and while they don't get much media attention, can pay off hand- somely for good play. Molino said the winner's check at a Golden Bear Tour event can be $24,000 in a 54-hole tournament. The tour cham- pionship has a total purse of $275,000, twice that of the weekly events. The South Florida Tour isn't as lucrative, and is considered a developmental circuit. The Council Rock game was postponed because conditions were unplayable, but the game was meaningless to who won the bracket, soit did not need tobe made up. The semifinal game was against the defending champions from Yardley-Morrisville, and the game was played in Yardley. The Legacy beat them during the indoor state cup in the winter, so a very tight game was expected. Back Mountain fought to a one-goal win by the score of 2-1. The momentum continued into the next week, with the Legacy defeating Lower Merion 3-1 in the state championship game. “The semifinal game was a more difficult game than the final,” commented Puffenberger. “Going into the title game, Lower Merion hadn't allowed a goal in state competition.” Back Mountain actually found itself down 1-0 at halftime of the state game, the only time in the tournament the Legacy was The championship game was played in not first to score. The format will be similar to the Snickers Cup in that there will be four brackets of four teams each. Each bracket will conduct its own round-robin competition to determine a division winner to be sent to the semifinal round. All teams, therefore, are guaranteed of three quality games. TENNIS District 2 Doubles Tournament Lake-Lehman had one of its two en- tries make it to the second round in the district doubles tournament played Thursday at Kirby Park. First-round matches were all played in pro set style. Dan Nygren and Andy Weaver defeated i their first-round opponents from 1 Montrose 8-5 before falling in the second round to the third seed. The Black Knight team of Liz Blidner and Alex Klaas fell in the opening round to the number one seed and eventual district-runner up from : Montrose. The Mountaineer team of John Beberus and Jeff Rothstein lost 8-6 to a + team from Dunmore, while the pair of | Adam Clay and Dan Laurenzi lost to the other Dunmore entry. VOLLEYBALL Lehman 2, Coughlin 0 Tom Brislin scored nine points as the Knights improved to 13-0 after defeating the Coughlin Crusaders. Brislin had four aces of those nine points and added five kills and two blocks. Noah Pickett contributed with seven kills, two blocks, and four points including a pair of aces. Josh Baranowski added five points in- cluding three aces. In the middle Russ Mosier had three kills, two blocks, and 15 assists. John Bebey added seven points. Game scores were 15-4, 15-2. Lehman 2, Wyoming Valley West 0 A 15-5, 15-4 victory over Wyoming Valley West sent Lake-Lehman to its eighth straight undefeated regular sea- son. Russ Mosier shined in the middle with five kills, four blocks, 13 points on serve including four aces, and 22 assists. Noah Pickett contributed with eight Kills, three digs, and a pair of blocks. Matt Dunn used height to finish with five blocks and five kills. Tom Brislin added seven kills and a block. Tunkhannock 2, Dallas 0 Tunkhannock swept Dallas 15-5, 15- 7 in a match at Dallas last Tuesday afternoon. Jeff Levinson led the way for the Mountaineers with nine assists and nine digs. Chris Organek had six Kills and three service points, while Dave Martin had four points on serve, four kills, and a pair of blocks. SOFTBALL Dallas 4, Meyers 0 Sarah Stolarick pitched five scoreless innings and had two singles in three at- bats offensively to help Dallas improve to 12-3 on the season with a home win against Meyers last Wednesday. She gave up just one hit and one walk in those five innings while striking out three. Sarah Rodgers also went 2-for-3 in the contest. Sherri Kuderka and Rachel Kukosky each doubled, with Kukosky driving in three of the four Mountaineer runs. The offense was steady too, with Dallas scoring single runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings.
