2 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 24, 2000 ‘Harveys Lake — (continued from page 1) mixture of new properties along- side historic properties. In this case, the lake becomes the geo- graphic landmark that joins the district. “What does it cost to apply?” asked Betty Ann West. Janosov replied, “$10,000-815,000. But, this could be lessened by volun- teers in the community.” Coun- cilman Ed Kelly asked what was the highest amount it was pos- sible to receive. “The state allows up to $15,000 if it is matched,” Janosov replied. The borough can also apply for Community Development Funds or a Block Grant, which was used in the Bear Creek Village project. The usual application procedure takes one to two years to get all the work done. Itis then sent to Harrisburg for initial approval, then on to Washington, D.C. for final ap- proval. A resident asked if the commu- nity has a right to vote for or against the designation. “It will be legally advertised,” said Newman. “Public meetings are required for ' citizen input and notification if individual properties are being considered.” The benefit of historic district status is “The higher level of sen- sitivity from state agencies when they are proposing projects,” Newman said. He also assured the residents that “It does not mean that some level of govern- ment will tell you what you can or can’t do with that property.” Gov- ernment intervention or control is involved in cases where public funds are used to improve or main- tain a historic property. In a letter to council, James DeGeorge submitted his resigna- tion as Zoning Officer, effective June 15. Among the reasons for his decision, he cited the frustra- tion of making decisions which always left at least one party un- happy or angry. Council Presi- ‘dent George Andrews commended DeGeorge for his accomplish- ments while in office. The posi- tion will be advertised as soon as possible. Andrews discussed a study of the lake by three Wilkes Univer- sity seniors and supervised by Dr. Michael Case. “They have identi- fied five significant watersheds which will make it easier for us to apply for Growing Greener Grants,” he said. He would like to see these projects continue annu- ally. Council voted to send letters of commendation in gratitude to them. On Saturday, June 3, samples of faucet water can be brought to the borough building in a annual program testing specimens for a variety of minerals as well as pos- sible contamination or health risks. Anyone interested in hav- ing their water tested should con- tact Carole Samson, Borough Sec- retary. L-J PTA sponsors book distribution Students at Lehman-Jackson Elementary School combined reading with fun recently when the PTA sponsored its last free RIF book distribution of the year. RIF Chairperson Cheryl Summa, and PTA parents volunteered their time to read and distribute more than 600 free books to the students. In keeping with the theme of making reading fund, students participated in an outdoor scavenger hunt, and were able to choose a free game related book for a little extra incentive to remind them to read through the summer. RIF, which stands for Reading is Fundamental, is the nations oldest and largest nonprofit literacy organization that helps provide books and reading motivational activities to more than 3 million children every year.
