Dal- las Youth Basketball won the championship with a 44-14 vic- tory over Shanix (WVW). Twelve teams from the valley competed in the tournament. Other mem- bers of the winning team scoring were Meredith Lacey 13 points, Jackie Hardwick 8 points, Rosalyn Wentko 6 points and Caitlin Dukas 1 point. Playing a good defensive game for Dallas Youth Basketball were Halli Williams, Ashleigh King, Brooke Blase and Kara Ringler. Dallas Youth Bas- ketball defeated Gate of Heaven 29 to 22 in semi-final action. BMT Baseball tryouts April 1 On Saturday, April 1, Back Mountain Baseball will conduct tryouts for all players who are not already members of a major league team and wish to play major or minor league baseball during the 2000 season, but did not attend the March 18 tryout session. -American League players may try out at 9 a.m. at the Dallas Middle School gym. Walk/run April 2 The Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley, in conjunc- tion with Bartikowsky Jewelers and Boscov's Department Store, will sponsor the River Street Three Mile Run and Walk Sunday, April 2.at 1pm. First place male and female finishers in the run and walk will receive a watch and trophy, cour- tesy of Bartikowsky Jewelers and Boscov's Department Store. Sports Shootout at the ol' Dallas Middle School The Kingston Twp. Recreation Commission held its 5th annual Basketball Shootout for boys and girls ages 7-16 last week. The event offered free throw and 3-point shooting contests. Neil Pollick had four digs for the Mountaineers. TENNIS Dallas 5, Meyers 2 The Dallas Mountaineers ten- nis team opened its season with a win at Meyers on Wednesday af- ternoon. Adam Clay (#1), Dan Laurenzi (#3), and Keith Sprau (#4) each won their singles matches in straight sets. All three ~ are juniors and so it was the first varsity singles match for each. Laurenzi and Sprau then com- bined to take the #1 doubles match and clinch the team victory for Dallas. That match was also a straight set win. Clay and senior Brittany Bartolini won a pro set at #2 doubles to earn the fifth win for the team. The two Meyers wins came in three sets. Berwick 5, Dallas 2 Berwick defeated Dallas on Thursday to improve to 2-0 on the season. Dallas falls to 1-1 with the loss. Dan Laurenzi and Keith Sprau each won their singles matches to improve to 2-0 on the season individually. After singles the match was tied 2-2, but Berwick swept the doubles com- petition in defeating the Moun- taineers on their home courts. Youth soccer registration April 8 Back Mountain Youth Soccer will hold registration for the fall semester Saturday, April 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dallas Middle School Cafeteria. Social Security numbers are needed for all players. Proofofage and Social Security numbers for new players. Players must be 6 years old before August 1, 2000. Single Year Age Groups U9 through U16. Graduating Dallas High football players announce choices for college Matt Acri will attend Shippensburg. The star running back and cornerback said he is undecided on a major. Joseph Stuppino, who was a captain on last year's squad, has accepted a package of aid to attend Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. “Ilona was recruiting me since the begin- ning of the season,” Stuppino said. Visits confirmed that it was the right choice. “It made me feel like being here,” he said $5,000 scholarship. Simpson will study international busi- ness. “I've just always been interested in it,” he said. Simpson also considered Penn State, Lehigh, Lafayette and Colgate. Three senior members of the Dallas High School football team announced their college choices Monday. Matthew Simpson will be attending Dickinson College in Carlisle this fall, receiving a academic of the small-town atmosphere. “And I have family and friends there.” Stuppino expects to play outside linebacker and defen- sive end for the Division 1 AA school. He is undecided on a major. County fish sale orders due by April 12 The Luzerne County District will be holding its Fish Sale again this year. We will be selling Channel Catfish and Lake Colorant with an order deadline of April 12, Largemouth Bass and Minnows with an order deadline of May 26, and Walleye and Yellow Perch with an order deadline of October 6. All orders can be placed at one time. Delivery dates and pick up information will be available on the order form. Gushanas holes ace on 17th at Irem Mark Gushanas Sr., scored his 4th hole in one at the Irem Temple Country Club, March 25. His ace came on the 150 yd, 17th hole. He used a Ping Eye 6 iron.
