Loefflad wins DMS geography bee Eric Loefflad, a seventh grade student at the Dallas Middle School, recently won the school- level competition of the National Geography Bee and a chance ata college scholarship. The bee is sponsored by the National Geo- ‘graphic Society. The first round for this years contest included thousands of schools from around the United States and U.S. Territories. The school winners will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in the state bee this spring. The National Geographic Soci- ety will provide and all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the state champions to partici- pate in the national champion- ship on May 23 and 24. The first-place winner will re- ceive a $25,000 college scholar- ship. Penn State Wilkes-Barre to feature webmaster program Penn State Wilkes-Barre will feature the University's new Webmaster Certificate during an open house scheduled at the cam- pus Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. Courses for the Webmaster Certificate are being offered re- gionally through the Continuing Education Departments at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Worthington Scranton and Hazleton. Courses are available in se- quence based on prerequisites and it is strongly suggested that par- ticipants enroll in and complete the entire certificate program. How- ever, individuals may elect to take specific courses on a space avail- able basis. Tuition reimbursement by employers is also an option for students enrolled in the Webmaster program. The World Organization of Webmasters and the Association of Internet Professionals (AIP) ap- prove the Penn State Webmaster Certificate, which is offered through the University’s College of Engi- neering. It is one of only a few webmaster programs approved by AIP. Some of the courses are HTML levels 1 and 2, Visual and Graphic Design, Legal and Ethical Issues, Emerging Technology, Publishing Internet Documents, JavaScripting, Multimedia on the Web, Network and Server Admin- istration, Security Issues and Ba- sics, Conducting Business on the Internet, “Front Page and PhotoShop. “The Webmaster Certificate pro- gram, which is a direct response to the needs of regional businesses, is one of our most successful new offerings,” said Ina Lubin, Penn State Wilkes-Barre director of con- tinuing education. “With a grow- ing demand for web page adminis- trators or webmasters, this pro- gram is designed to teach the es- sentials of web communications,” she explains.
