2 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 12, 2000 DISTRICT COURT BRIEFS State police allege gambling at Harveys Lake restaurant ~ State police have charged Evelyn Walsh, 57, or RR 3, Box 306, Harveys Lake, with allowing gambling at Rich & Charlotte's in Harveys Lake. Trooper Robert T. Calavano said he observed a fe- male patron playing video poker August 7. The trooper said she deposited $20 in the machine, played for several minutes and accumulated paper tickets, which she took to the bar and gave to Walsh. Walsh then took $50 from the cash register and another S50 from the kitchen area and gave the S100 to the woman, Calavano said in an affidavit of probable cause. ' Calavano marked the machine, then returned Sept. 24 and Oct. 5 and observed that the machine was operational. A gambling raid was conducted Oct. 7, when the machine was seized. ASSAULT CHARGES e Joseph Donald VanOrden, 46, of 29 Valley View Trailer Park, Dallas, faces one charge of simple assault and two counts of harass- ment as the result of a domestic dispute the evening of Dec. 22. State police trooper Thomas ~ Kaminski said VanOrden argued with his 14-year-old step daugh- ter and pushed her. He then punched his wife, Mary Louise VanOrden in the face, causing her right eye to become swollen. e Howard Stritzinger, 20, of 56 Meadowcrest Apt., Trucksville will go to trial on one count each of simple assault and harassment. He is accused of striking a woman and knocking her to the floor in a home at 138 Cedar Ave., Shaver- town, at about 3 a.m. Nov. 5. Kingston Twp. police officer Frank Ziegler interviewed the alleged vic- tim and two witnesses, one of whom said he saw Stritzinger strike the woman. THEFT OF CD PLAYER FROM CAR Zachary Matthew Dodson, 19, of 918 Main Rd., Hunlock Creek, faces two charges of theft and of receiving stolen property and one count of criminal mischief as a result of an incident Sept. 9. State trooper Joseph Wasko said some- one broke into a car parked in a yard on Lamoreaux Rd. in Lake Twp., removed the dashboard and took a CD player. A CD changer under therear seat was also taken. Trooper Wasko was able to lift fingerprints from the car, and Dodson confessed to the theft when told of that fact. According to officer David Fitch of the Dallas Twp. Police Dept., Davis was driving north on Rt. 309 at about 5:42 p.m. Nov. 28 when the car he was driving crossed over the southbound lane and traveled up a bank, coming to rest 25 yards off the roadway against two trees. Witnesses, including a Bal- timore police officer, said they saw Davis give a small child who had been in the car to another driver, then flee intonearby woods. During his investigation, officer Fitch was told the child was at Davis's home, where he met a woman who said Davis had handed her the 4-month-old child before leaving the accident scene. The child was taken to Tyler Me- morial Hospital for treatment, where Davis was taken into cus- tody when he and the child's mother came to see it. e William G. Harrison, 42, of RD 1, Box 52, Spruce Tree Rd. Noxen, was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. Oct. 3 by Lehman Twp. po- lice officer John Young after Young saw a car driven by Harrison speeding on Lehman-Outlet Rd. Young said he chased the car, but was unable to catch up with it, then lost contact with it. As he was turning on to Troxell Switch Rd., he saw a car’s lights come on and drive away. Young said he called for support to Harveys Lake officer James Karlowicz, who saw the car turn onto West Point Ave. and travel at more than 80 mph, then run a stop sign. Harrison was finally stopped near Hanson's campground. A blood alcohol test measured .179 percent, well over the legal limit of .10 percent. He also faces charges of careless driv- ing, speeding and driving without lights. The following people waived their right to a preliminary hearing before District Justice James Tupper. Their cases were for- warded to county court. e Robert Senkus, 33, of RR 1, Box 1179, Sweet Valley, arrested Nov. 28 after a Jeep he was driv- ing struck another Jeep parked near Pole 165, Lakeside Dr. Senkus said he did not see the other vehicle. Harveys Lake office James Karlowicz said Senkus failed field sobriety tests, and his blood alcohol was measured at .191 percent at Wilkes-Barre Gen- eral Hospital. e Christopher B. Jaskulski, 25, of RD 2, Box 423, Harveys Lake, arrested Aug. 31 by Dallas Bor- ough police officer James Martin. Martin said he timed a car driven by Jaskulski at 56 mph in a 35 mph zone of Rt. 309, Dallas. Mar- tin said Jaskulski said he was in a hurry to get home to tell his wife he had received a promotion. A breath test measured Jaskulski’s blood alcohol level at .131 per- cent. A subsequent blood alcohol test measured .145 percent. e Sean M. Rosencrance, 20, of RR 1, Box 2588, Pittston, arrested Oct. 17 by Dallas Twp. police of- ficer Fred Rosencrans after he was called to a rollover accident on Lower = Demunds Rd. Rosencrance was standing near the vehicle when police arrived, and he refused medical treatment. After he failed field sobriety tests, Rosencrance’s blood alcohol level was measured at.153 percent. He is also charged with careless driv- ing. e Steven Esposito, 28, of 18 Idlewood Dr., Dallas, arrested Oct. 24 by Dallas Twp. police officer Brian Feeney. Feeney said that he saw a car parked in the east- bound lane by the bridge on E. Center Hill Rd., near Meadows Manor. Feeney said the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Field sobriety tests were unsatisfactory and a breath test measured Esposito’s blood alcohol level at .146 percent. * David L. Covert, 47, of RD 4, Box 362C, Dallas, arrested July 23 by patrolman John Fuches of the Lake Twp. Police Dept. after Fuches saw a pickup truck driven by Covert driving erratically on Church Rd. Fuches said Covert failed field sobriety tests, and a blood alcohol test measured .256 percent, more than twice the legal limit. LASKOWSKI Brenda 1. Laskowski, 41, of Hillside Ave. died Jan. 4, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of Anna Lord DeWitt. Luzerne, and the late Andrew DeWitt Sr., Dallas High School and as a reg- istered nurse from Luzerne County Community College. Ms. Laskowski resided in Hughestown and Luzerne before moving to Harveys Lake two years ago. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Lakeside Nursing Center, Harveys Lake and previ- ously by the Visiting Nurse Asso- ciation, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of Eatonville United Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are brothers, John and Andrew, both of Luzerne; sister Anne Marie Reese, Waterville, N.Y.; a niece and nephews; care giver and friend, Deanne Harpe, with whom she resided. GERMAN Mary A. German, 95, of Dallas, died Jan. 5, 2000, at The Mead- ows Nursing Center, Dallas. She was born Aug. 1, 1904, in Shenandoah, daughter of the late John and Mary Urban Thomas, and attended Rock Glenn Schools. Mrs. German had been em- ployed as a seamstress by Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas. Her husband, George H., died in 1961; son, John, died in 1990. Several brothers and sisters also preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter, Mary Weir, Dallas; six grandchil- dren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Descenzo, N.J.; brother, Albert Thomas, Fla.; nieces and nephews. Her former husband, James Stanley, 10 brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
