Nod? pl NDA 0 A The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 22, 1999 11 ~ Miseri adds social work scholarship Although the national need for } social workers and counselors is expected lo increase by between 10 and 35 percent over the next few years, experts say the supply will not keep up with the demand. In an effort to help reduce the predicted shortage of social work- ers and counselors in Northeast- ern Pennsylvania, College Misericorida is offering a new $10,000 scholarship to social work and psychology students who enroll in Fall, 2000. The scholarship, called Part- ners in Service, will provide $2,500 each year for four years to each scholarship recipient. To be eli- gible, students must meet the fol- lowing criteria: a B average or better in high school; rank in the © grade 11 is the top third of their high school; rank in the top third of their high school graduating class or receive a mini- mum SAT score of 1000; partici- pation in service activities; and a strong desire to succeed in a ser- vice profession. Scholarships will be awarded following evaluation of applications and a written es- say. Misericordia’s social work pro- gram, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1975, offers specializations in child welfare services, gerontol- ogy, addictions counseling and psychology. Both the social work and psychology degree programs prepare graduates for jobs in their fields or for graduate study. For more information about these programs or scholarships call 674-6461.
