Leigh Dodson, left, and Iris Johnston laid out tasty treats at the Brazil table. The menu included cooked cassava melon, crab sushi, potato scones and kalupsie soup, and the servers looked like they had just arrived at JFK for a multi-cultural trade fair. That's how it feels to attend the International Dinner, held each year in the cafeteria at Lake- Lehman High School, which was trans- formed Monday evening into a gustatory and esthetic delight. But it's hard to get a ticket. Rich Gorgone, who team teaches the Humani- ties II class with Sandy Weyman, said the room can only accommodate parents, school board members, administration and “people who help a lot.” That in- cludesJoanna Oliver's grandmother, who helped her group prepare the Poland table, which represented a Christmas dinner in the old country. The sophomore advanced placement class is used to teach history and English in one package. For the dinner, the stu- dents research the customs. dress and food of the country they select, and in addition to putting on a meal each group does a skit in the auditorium before the cafeteria doors open to guests. Research is conducted in the school library, on the Internet and with family and friends. The dinner serves as a report. Students choose the country they wish to portray, and form groups on their own. Leigh Dodson said her group picked Bra- zil, “Because no one else is doing it, and itwas never done before.” Heather Prescott said Japan is “just an interesting cul- ture,” and that inspired the group she was in. “Instead of writing a paper, they per- form a live paper,” said Gorgone. And there are no revisions for the meal, it is prepared and served once. To avoid prob- lems, home economics teachers work with the students as they plan the meals. Rich Gorgone, McRoy’s high school coach, appreciated the range of schools on hand. “What it does is give them the chance to look at a variety of colleges at once,” he said. “Not just one or two coaches are here, but over 40. It gets the players on a lot of lists. It’s a great occasion to get all of these coaches in one place it saves a lot of time.” Ted Jackson, head coach at Dallas, agreed. “If you're a senior it's a good opportunity, you get a chance to meet the schools di- rectly. If you're an underclass- men it gives you a chance to get on some mailing lists. The good thing about this, is that it’s local, you only have to travel 15 minutes from your house.” Two local students felt the per- sonal contact afforded by the fair help their college decision-mak- ing. “Meeting the coaches is help- ful, because itis good to put a face with the school,” said Lloyd Drop- pers, a Dallas resident attending Wyoming Seminary The Best P. ive Lens Avai : lig tna SAVANE EY EGL ASSE S ; e Best Progressive Lens Available I choices,” said Tim Carroll, a : VARILUX Bishop O'Reilly student from Dal- 1 BUY ONE GET ONE COMFORT LENSES I las. “If you didn’t go and talk to 1 i 1 the coaches, how else would they F ru H = | $1 b 4 | know about you, there are so man : | players.” y 1 ANY FRAME IN STOCK !
