i 6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 8, 1999 Shape Note Singers will gather The Endless Mountain Shape Note Singers meet Sunday. Dec. 12, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Dallas. Singers and interested listeners are welcome, and there is no ad- mission. The group sings a cappella four-part shape note music, and uses the "Sacred Harp," a collection of sacred songs, and anthems, published continu- ously since 1844 (loaner copies are available). The music is writ- ten in standard musical notation, but is supplemented by shaped note heads, originally intended to accommodate those who could not read music. The event is at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Main St., Dallas, off Rt. 309. The musical tradition is for the singers lo be seated in a hollow square, and to first sing the se- lected piece through using the syllables of the shape notation (fa, so. la, mi) before singing the words. The music includes 18th century New England [uging tunes, an- thems, lolk and gospel hymns. camp-meeting songs [rom the 19th century, and some modern tunes in these traditions. Shape note singers gather for enjoyment, not in preparation for perfor- mance. There is no need to profi- ciently read music, and all are welcome.
