The Druckenm 2: illers, in a photo from their album, “Til the Clouds Roll By” Contra Dance brings 'Friends and Kin' together A New England Contra dance sponsored by the Chicory House and the Folklore Society will fea- ture the band “Friends and Kin” on Saturday, Dec. 11, starting at 8 p.m. at St. Therese’'s Catholic Church, Pioneer Ave., Shaver- town. No partner or previous dance experience is necessary. All dances are taught and called by Liz Bradley. She has been calling contras and family dances for six years in the Philadelphia area, and is known for clear teaching and beautifully flowing and high energy dances. “Friends and Kin” consists of Tom, Betty, and son Nathan Druckenmiller, along with Dave Miller and his daughter Hannah. This is a newly formed band con- sisting of several very experienced musicians. The Druckenmillers BLOODMOBILE DEC. 6, LAKE NOXEN ELEM. have played for dances in the Bethlehem area with the “WDIY All-Stars” for a number of years. Tom plays clawhammer style banjo, including gigs on his own program “In the Tradition” on radio station WDIY, 88.1 FM, the community public station for the Lehigh Valley. Their first recording, “The Road Home,” was released on Little Cat Records in May 1998. A review in “Bluegrass Unlimited” said the recording is “Like a musical eve- nings in the parlor..the recording has a relaxed informal quality that immediately makes the listener feel as welcome as a neighbor dropping in on such a gathering. Aniiexcellent release.” The Drukenmillers have now released another CD, “Til the Clouds Roll By” which has received airplay on local public radio stations. SPECIAL EVENTS Contradancingis energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the se- quence. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone “walk through” the dance while explain- ing it. The dancing is moderately aerobic, but all figures can be accomplished with a walking step. Callers encourage dancers to try dancing with a different partner after each dance, and experienced dancers are quick to invite begin- ners into the lines. Admission to the dance is $6 for adults and $15 for families. Lightweight clothing is recom- mended. Dancers may bring a snack to share at intermission. For information, call 333-4007.
