The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 17, 1999 5 Library News Carol King The Monday morning book dis- () @ cussion group has now read two SHIR » ® books. I would not attempt per- sonal reviews of them, but will rely on what I sense to be the group's reactions. The first book was Falling Leaves, The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daugh- ter, by Adeline Yen Mah. The author was born into a wealthy and privileged Chinese family in the 1930's. We [ound ~ the book fascinating, although we were appalled by the cruel emo- tional abuse by her stepmother which made her growing-up years a challenge to survive. The book is tightly written, an intriguing report of life during the Commu- Book notes Mary Lou Swingle It's hard to believe the Slightly Read Bookshop is celebrating its firstanniversary. Timereally does fly. As part of the anniversary celebration the recent mailer sent out by the library contained a coupon for a discount on a book. We are still featuring some thrillers and espionage. A Christ- mas display will be set up soon featuring gift books for the whole family. Books are always a wel- come gift and the ones in the Two books, two views nist takeover, and a {tribute to Adeline’s indomitable spirit which enabled her to become a physi- cian and a writer. On an ascend- ing scale of 1 to 5, the group gave it a rating ol 4. The plot of the second book, The Pilot's Wife, by Anita Shreve, revolves around the grief of his widow aller he dies in a plane crash olf the coast of Ireland. As the story proceeds some surpris- ing facts are disclosed which give the novel an element of suspense. Again, the group enjoyed reading the book, but found that it was not “meaty” and lacked character development. One member termed it "McDonald's for the mind,” and others referred to it as “beach reading.” The rating of 3 was, we felt, too high in contrast to the 4 given to Falling Leaves, which may en- courage us to change toa 1 to 10 scale, or discard the scale alto- gether!
