Gergel is a seventh grade student and this year’s Prudential Spirit of Commu- nity award winner. She earned the distinction for her work at an area hospital. “I volun- teered about 110 hours over the summer at the VA (Veter- ans’ Hospital),” said Gergel. “While I was there, I worked with people in the offices sending mail to different parts of the hospital and stuff like that.” The task was less than glamorous but Gergel, who is eligible for the Pennsylvania youth volunteer of the year award, said she learned . several important lessons from the experience. “I found out that only veterans can go to this hospital,” she said. “It plays a really important role because the doctors and everyone there keep the veterans healthy.” Observing the healing process has led Gergel to consider medicine as a possible career. “I would like to be a doctor because I think it's good to help people,” she said. Shika Sharma, also a seventh grade student, is Tiffany Gergel, It plays a really important role . De the doctors and everyone there k er the veterans healthy.” Tiffany Gergel Dallas Middle School 7th grader committed to helping others as well. “I really like kids, so when I grow up I might be a part-time teacher,” she said. Sharma’s community service project earned her a Prudential Spirit of Commu- nity certificate of merit and offered a real-life lesson about how to be an effective teacher. “In my neighborhood, I started a kids’ club and we had 31 kids sign up on the first day,” she said. "They are all younger than I am so they kind of look up to me. That was one cool thing about it.” The Dallas youngsters hold periodic fund raisers to support group activities, which include a field trip during the summer months. “We have neighborhood carnivals, our winter carnival is coming up, and we have lemonade stands when it’s hot outside,” said Sharma. “We are saving money to go on a trip to Hershey Park, or Dorney Park or Knoebel's with our families.” Members of the kids’ club are learning, like their leader, that community service is both fun and rewarding. “Everyone in the club tries to help out other people in our neighborhood,” said Sharma. “We carry groceries for elderly Middle School students honored for service POST PHOTO/KASIA McDONOUGH center left, and Shika Sharma, center right, received Prudential Spirit of Community awards.
