Late bus (continued from page 1) could be found soon. “We pay $3,488 in school taxes every year and all I'm asking of that money is busing,” said Marilyn Stanks. The tardiness can be attrib- uted to a recent change in the busing schedule designed to alle- viate problems associated with Dallas Middle School students arriving prior to the building open- ing. “No one is there to supervise the middle school students until 7:30 a.m. and they were standing around in the parking lot prior to the start of the school day,” said Dr. Gilbert Griffths, Supermicn- dent. Altering the bus schedule to accommodate Dallas Middle School students makes it impos- sible for drivers to reach Gate of Heaven students in a timely man- ner. “If the bus isn’t leaving the middle school until 7:30 there is no way it can follow that route and get to Gate of Heaven on time,” said Karen Kyle, school board member. “Even if it did not stop it couldn't get there before 8 a.m.” Dr. Griffiths said he has been communicating with Mary Tigue, the principal at Gate of Heaven, and that he was under the im- pression the buses were arriving close to their scheduled time. “I talked with Mary Tigue last Fri- day and I thought the buses were “If the bus isn r leaving the midd ~ school until 7 30 about 2 or 3 minutes late,” he said. A proposed solution would in- volve reorganizing the problem- atic route to make it more effi- cient. “I'm going to have to look into it myself but it does seem like a long run,” said Griffiths. “If we can break the route into two parts, we can make it more manage able.” Aciukewicz said parents are concerned about students wait- ing at bus stops for extended pe- riods as the winter months are approaching. “I'm not pressuring the board, but we are getting into the colder part of the year and we'd like to have some resolution as soon as possible,” he said. Westmoreland (continued from page 1) would discuss each method at next month's work session and decide how to move forward. The Pennsylvania school code requires that proceeds from the sale be used to offset the debt incurred from the construction of Wycallis Elementary School. The district does not plan to sell the former Dallas Township High School building and adja- cent office space. “We have been approached by Head Start about creating an early intervention pro- gram which would be housed in that space after the building has been cleaned: up.” said Dr. Griffiths. “We are also consider- ing some kind of before-and-af- ter-school program for latch key children.” A survey conducted last year showed strong support for this type of program. “We had more than 200 positive responses indi- cating families in the district are interested in either a before or after school program,” said Griffths. “I think it would really be beneficial for us and for the com- munity to have that program there.” Q: Where do you find the most Back Mountain news each week?
