Black Knights By JEFF FANECK Post Correspondent Coming off a run fo the PIAA AA state soccer semifinal is going to be a tough act to follow for the Lake Lehman boys However, many of the key players from last year’s squad are returning this season and hoping to match or surpass last year’s attain- ment. Lake-Lehman This past weekend the Black Knights captured first place in a tournament held in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Lehman fell behind 1-0 in its first game but came from behind to earn the victory. Coach Mark Stroney is back for his seventh year at Lehman and sees the tournament as a real benefit to his team. : “After two scrimmages where we weren't really tested, the early deficit in the first game of the tournament showed me that our team is capable of coming from behind and playing well under pressure,” Stroney said. Lehman then went on to shutout Danville 4-0 and take the tournament title. “One very positive thing about the Lock Haven tournament is that our team spends an entire day together and usually ends up coming together very nicely before the start of the season.” said the coach. Last season Lehman finished with a record of 23-2-1. Many of those same players are back, but not necessarily in “Although we have a talented team, we're not a deep team.’ Mark Stroney Head coach the same positions. Senior goalkeeper Russ Mosier is a three-year lettermen and a two-year starter in net. His leadership ability has helped him become a captain this season. The defense in front of Mosier will feature junior Steve Moyer, junior B.J. Lewis, senior Brian Noler, and sopho- “more Chris Kabosky. The center midfield will consist of sophomores David Walters, who is arguably the best player in the confer- ence, and Jason Mahle, who saw considerable time last season. Mahle, junior Chip Harrison, and senior Tom Brislin can play anywhere on the field. Up front finds Tony Van Scoy, who will contend for top scorer in the conference. “Although we have a talented team, " Stroney warns. Hopefully some younger kids will develop as the season goes on and ‘maybe contribute some varsity time and give some of the older kids a break. We'll be moving players around to keep everyone fresh in the meantime. The ages of our players are steadily distrib- uted. ‘This is a good mix.” Coach Stroney sees the toughest roadblocks on his quest for another league championship to be Wyoming Valley West, Coughlin, and Dallas. we're not a deep team, “ Tell our advertisers you saw them in The Dallas Post. They'll appreciate it, and so will we. loaded with talent for title defense ? Stroney is assisted by Gary Norconk, Wil Woronko, and Tim Norconk. POST PHOTO/CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK Dallas looking to get back into playott picture By JEFF FANECK Post Correspondent Eighth year head coach Ron Moran's Dallas Mountaineer field hockey team again has a trademark strong defense. However, to improve on last season’s record of 11-7-2, he knows his team needs to add some offensive punch. Coach stresses, “We need more offense than we had last year. The girls need to finish better.” Tri-captains Shannon Cosgrove, Sherri Kuderka, and-Jenny Yurkon will be looked up to as senior leaders this season. The team consists of a very even distribution among the classes of girls. A total of 32 girls are out for this year's team, with the steady mixture having 11 seniors and 12 juniors. IDEVIET Coach Moran sees this as a definite positive. “Our mixture of veterans and The Post has school “We need more offense than we had last year. The girls need to finish better.."” Ron Moran Head coach new people should help the newer players learn a lot faster. They should all learn from each other ideally,” he said. The defense will be led by two-year starter junior Melonie Sappe. Fresh- man Erin Swepston will also contend for the starting spot. “Our defense will be very strong,” Moran assures. “We are just very eager to improve on last year since we missed the playoffs for the first time in a while,” Moran said. “The girls are very determined, positive, and working hard. All things are going for us right now.” Coach Moran expects Crestwood, Lake-Lehman, Lackawanna Trail, Delaware Valley and Nanticoke to be the -year subscriptions The Dallas Post offers special subscriptions for students going away to school or college.
