at Sa oe ed Gate of Heaven School has entered the computer age in a big way. When stu- dents return to the Catholic school this year, they'll find a total of 61 computers in the classrooms, office, and in a brand- new computer lab. Abe Simon, a math teacher in the middle school at Gate of Heaven, was in charge of installing the system. “We started dreaming about it in January,” he said. Installation began June 12, after the school had sent Simon to several training courses on network administration and wiring. : The heart of the system is the computer lab, which houses 34 machines in a tiered layout. There also are computers in every classroom, including the music room and library, all connected on a Windows NT In photo at right, Mary Kozick, assistant principal at Gate of Heaven School, peers out from among the 34 computers in the school Gate of Heaven goes hi-tech network. All the work, including conversion of a first-grade classroom into the lab, was done “in-house” by Gate of Heaven staff and faculty, with help from many parents. Simon singled out Paul Moran, a parent, as being particularly valuable. “He's kind of been my expert, to call when problems crop up,” Simon said. In addition to educational software, Simon will install an administrative « program that will allow teachers to handle paperwork over the network. “We have a lot of plans for this,” he said, including addition of a program that will allow projection of one screen onto all 34 machines in the lab. Funding for the project came from within the school community and grants. s new computer lab.
