Two Waterways Conservation Officers with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Jim Stout of Sweet Valley and John Cummings from Carbondale, spoke to the group. John had brought with him his friend, an Amanda Kocher got up close and personal with an Eastern hogshead snake. Eastern hogshead snake named Mike, who allowed himself to be petted by any of the children (or adults, mostly herpephobes) who chose to do so. John told us about several dis- tinguishing characteristics of the three kinds of venomous snakes in ‘Pennsylvania — the Northern copperhead and two varieties of rattlesnakes. However, he cau- tioned that the best way to treat any snake you meet on the trail is Snakes slither into reading program to leave it alone. If children find one that they think may be ven- omous, they should tell a respon- sible adult about it. I was impressed by the library's sponsorship of this excellent pre- sentation. Equally impressive was the amount of knowledge about snakes which many of the preschoolers already had! Marilyn Rudolph says that the subject has great appeal among young read- ers at the library. Ruth Tetschner has written of her plans for the “Slightly Read Bookshop,” just reopened last week. She would welcome contributions of the follow- ing types of literature: clas- sical books in hardcover or paperback to provide for local students; books for young children, preschool and early grades, the sup- ply of which was depleted during the Auction; and fiction and non-fiction that is fewer than five years old. She also reminds stu- dents that a donation of books from their school reading lists would help not only the bookshop, but other students. Noted was the fact that customers are not interested in Reader's Digest Condensed Books or National Geographics, so Ruth asks that they not be brought to the shop. Ruth expresses great apprecia-- tion for the wonderful support the shop received prior to and during the Auction, and asks that every- one start coming again now that the bookshop is open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Please call the library for the hours. During the reopening the books of Danielle Steel and Sidney Sheldon are being promoted.
