Okal, 87, of Highland Avenue in the Trucksville section of Kingston Township died Aug. 4, 1999, in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice Care of the VNA at Heri- tage House in Wilkes-Barre. Born Jan. 30, 1912, in Wilkes- Barre, he was a son of the late John J. and Susan (Hiscar) Okal. He attended Wilkes-Barre schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Euro- pean Theater. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was employed as a con- struction supervisor in the local construction industry. He was a member of the Carpenters Union and was involved with many area projects, such as the building of the Salem Nuclear Power Station and various projects at the De- partment of Veterans Affairs Medi- cal Center in Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of St. Therese's Church in Shavertown, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283 in Kingston, the American Association of Retired Persons and the First Catholic Slovak Union of ' the United States and Canada. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Loretta Sebastian; and brothers, Joseph, Martin and Thomas. Surviving are his sister, Mary Teresa Okal, Wilkes-Barre; broth- ers, Cyril and Andrew, both of Wilkes-Barre; Albert, Cleveland, OH; and three nephews. Interment, Mount Olivet Cem- etery, in the Carverton section of Kingston Township. Memorial donations may be made to St. Therese’s Church, or to Hospice Care of the VNA in Wilkes-Barre. JOHN SHOLTIS John M. Sholtis, 86, of Leh- man-Outlet Road in Lake Town- ship, died Aug. 2, 1999, at his home. Born June 19, 1913, in Swoyersville, he was a son of the late John and Agnes (Senanek) Sholtis. He had resided in Lake Township for the last 39 years. He worked as a coal miner at various area mines, and was em- ployed as a custodian for the Lake- Lehman School District for 12 years until retiring 22 years ago. He was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Michael. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Bertha Eades; son, Robert W., with whom he resided; daughter, Jean M. Sholtis, at home; brothers, Stephen, Tunkhannock; and Ed- ward, Dallas; sisters, Mary Skoronski, Vernon; Elizabeth Gutch and Margaret Kleban, both of Hunlock Creek; and Anna Kleban, Harveys Lake and nu- merous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Westmoreland High School Trucksville, he was a graphic design professor with the Corcoran School of Art for 33 years, until he retired in 1998. Holvey, who lived in Sterling, VA, was born in Plymouth. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Syra- cuse University and a master’s degree in fine arts at American University. He served in the Army in the early 1960s. He resided in Bethesda, MD before settling in Sterling in 1995. In addition to Corcoran, he also taught at the University of Mary- land in College Park in the 1970s and 1980s. Since 1988, he had worked as a freelance exhibit de- signer.
