Lackawanna 12, Harveys Lake 6 Lackawanna scored eight runs in the top of the second to dis- tance themselves early from Harveys Lake and eliminate the locals from sectional play. Charlie Besteder took the loss, giving up ten runs on six hits. Gaise Lacek had three hits to lead the Harveys Lake offense, while Jeremy and A.J. Harris each went 2-for-4 with a double. Jeff Taylor also doubled AMERICAN LEGION Back Mountain 13, Greater Pittston 7 Greg Woronko pitched a com- plete game only walking one bat- ter to help earn the right for Back Mountain to get a rematch with Pittston for the league title. Woronko struck out six batters. The offense was led by second baseman D.J. Kapson, who went 5-for-5 with tworuns scored. John Habrack went 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, while Jake Rambus was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Rich Patton added three hits in- cluding a double with two runs knocked in, and Jeremy Harris had two hits including while scor- ing three and knocking in three. Greater Pittston 5, Back Mountain 4 Pittston defeated Back Moun- tain to earn the league champion- ship. John Habrack struck out seven over nine innings, but the offense could not overcome the pitching of Pittston’'s George LoPresto. Habrack and Greg Woronko had multiple hit games offensively, with Woronko driving in two runs with a double. Jeremy Harris scored ‘twice for Back ‘Mountain. KUBJS TOURNAMENT ‘Back Mountain American 12, LCP 1 Adam King struck out nine ~ while allowing just three hits and one walk in earning a complete game win over LCP in the first round of the Kubis tournament. Justin Orlandini and Nick Oschman led a steady offense by going 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Matt Shumbris and Brian Goeringer each doubled and scored a run. King had a two-run single in the first inning. Back Mountain National 15, Northwest 3 Ron Shiner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead National to an opening-round victory Sat- urday morning. David Harding had a two-run homerun to high- light the offensive display. Matt Kapitula and Gracjan Kraszewski each had two hits, while leadoff batter Nate Carr scored threeruns. .Back Mountain National 12, Plains 6 In a battle of tournament favor- ‘ites, National scored nine runs in ‘the top of the first to get out to an early lead and then held on for a six-run victory on Sunday. Joe Bailey for Ameri- can doubled home Adam King with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the win. King finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Mike Race led the output for Horlacher by hitting a long two-run homerun to right field with no outs in the top of the sixth. David DeSoo finished with two doubles. Gracjan Kraszewski smashed a home run and a single to lead Back Mountain's offense. Alan Sheridan contributed 3 singles and Ron Shiner added 2. Back Mountain National 4, Wyoming/West Wyoming 2 Matt Kapitula homered and singled to lead Back Mountain National to a tough 4-2 win over Wyoming/West Wyoming in the second round of the West Pittston 11 Year Old Tournament. Alan Sheridan singled twice for National and was the winning pitcher. David Harding struck out the side in the 6th inning to record the save. Back Mountain National 9, North Wilkes-Barre 2 Alan Sheridan, Gracjan Kraszewski, Matt Kapitula and David Harding combined to strike out 10 batters as Back Mountain National advanced to the winners’ . bracket championship ‘game in the West Pittston 11 Year Old Tournament with a 9-2 victory over North Wilkes-Barre. Kapitula belted 2 doubles and a single while Nathan Carr, Harding and Kraszewski each collected a double. NORTHWEST 9/10 YEAR OLD TOURNAMENT Back Mountain National 12, Kingston 2 : On Sunday, Back Mountain National advanced in the North- west 9-10-Year-Old Tournament by defeating Kingston 12-2 in a game called after 4 innings in accordance with the 10-run rule. Steve Cornia struck out 7 batters en route to the complete game victory. Mike Prater’s 3 doubles, one of which narrowly missed clearing the left center field fence, led the Back Mountain attack. Cornia and Dylan Seeley each smacked a double and a single and Mike Zaleskas belted a double for the winners. John Giampietro, Jeff Clemente, Seeley and Prater each ‘scored 2 runs. Prater col- lected 3 RBIs while Cornia knocked home 2 runs. " Back Mountain National 15, Ed/Lark 4 Mike Prater singled twice and drove in 3 runs to power Back Mountain National to a 15-4 vic- tory over .Ed/Lark and a spot in the Northwest 9/10 Year Old Tour- nament championship game. Steve Cornia doubled and collected 2 RBIs for Back Mountain. John Giampietro scored 4 runs while Chris DeRojas, Ryan Konopki, Jared Kopechne and Chad Gelso each scored twice. Konopki, who also had 2 RBIs, struck out 5in 3 innings of pitching while Dylan Seeley struck out 1 in 1 scoreless inning of relief. Mountaintop 11, Back Mountain National 10 Mountaintop rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to defeat Back Mountain National 11-10 and capture the Northwest 9/10 Year Old Tournament champion- ship. Bretz led the Mountaintop offense with a double and 2 singles while Chris Wychock and Funke singled twice. Jody Dymond struck out 4 in garnering the com- plete game victory. Ryan Konopki lined 3 singles and collected 3 RBIs for Back Mountain while teammate Dylan Seeley tripled twice and also col- lected 3 RBIs. Mike Prater doubled and singled while driving home 2 runs. Konopki scored 3 times while Chris DeRojas and Seeley scored twice. Konopki struck out 1 in 3 strong innings on the mound. Seeley struck out 3 in 2 1/3 innings. DISTRICT 16 9/10 YEAR Close shave After handily winning the District championship, the Back Mountain Senior Girls Softball team ran into a determined West End team Saturday. Back Mountain literally squeezed out a 2-1 victory when Carrie Thimot scored on a bunt off the bat of Colleen Mahon. In top photo, Natalie Shiskowski, on a two-strike count, smashed a single through the middle and advanced to second on the center fielder's error. At left, April Naugle tried to dig out a toss from catcher Melonie Sappe but couldn't hold on, giving the visitors their only run. But Naugle shut down West End the rest of the way.
