Edwards, of Overbrook Road, Dallas, ‘died May 27, 1999 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, where he had been a patient. Born Jan. 6, 1925, in Edwardsville, hewasason =~ 7 ° J of the late Dr. V.P. and Helen Hall Edwards. He was a 1942 graduate of Edwardsville High School and graduated from Bloomsburg State College. He began his teaching career in Lower Moreland High School in suburban Phila- delphia, where he coached football, bas- ketball and baseball. He later accepted a teaching position with Lake-Lehman School District where he taught math and science for 29 years. also served as athletic director at Lake-Lehman and coached football and other sports for many years. Upon his retirement in 1982, the Lake-Lehman School Board honored him by naming the football stadium the Edward H. Edwards Stadium. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Africa and Italy. Edwards and Maggie ALBERT HICKS Albert A. Hicks, Jr., 69, of Dal- las died May 28, 1999 at his home. Born Feb. 11, 1930, in Ply- mouth, he was the son of the late Albert and Myrtle (Phillips) Hicks. He has resided in Dallas for the last 41 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was employed by L&:L Sup- ply Co. in Wilkes-Barre for 43 years, retiring 10 years ago. He was a member and former trustee of the Valley View Union Chapel in Larksville. He was preceded in death by his sister, Wilmet Hicks. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, the former Grayce Law; ‘daughters, Carol Nygren, Sweet Valley; Tena Zekas, Shavertown; and Louise Hicks, Meshoppen; three grandchildren and sister, ‘Betty Lou Brown, Plymouth. GERALD WOOD Gerald A. Wood, 72, of York, formerly of Kingston and Harveys Lake, died May 28, 1999 in the York Hospital. BorndJan. 2, 1927, in Montrose, he was the son of the late Walter and Charlotte Honeywell Wood. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as Sea- man 2nd Class. He received the Asiatic-Pacific area and the Ameri- can area campaign ribbons. Before retiring, in 1989, he was employed as a shipper for Offset . Paperback Co. in Dallas. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283, Kingston; the Graphic Communi- cations Workers Union; and a life member of the Disabled Ameri- can Veterans. He and his wife, the former Mary Walters, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in Feb. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond, Horace and Richard Wood. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary, are daughters, Donna Swankie, Laurel Run; June Ebaugh, York; brothers, Luther Wood, York; Edward Wood, Binghamton, NY; sisters, Louise Spencer, Hallstead; Shirley Yenelavitch, Luzerne; Janet Wood, Wilkes-Barre; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nu- merous nieces and nephews. Born Nov. 10, 1907, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Hilda May Newberry. Surviving are his son, Daniel, three grandsons, one grand- daughter and his late wife's son Severn Newberry. Carmon, 78, of Lake Township, died May 15, 1999, at his home. Born Feb. 12, 1921, in Bridge- port, CT, he was the son of the late Harry and Elsie Kenim Carmon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Euro- pean Theater. He attended New York City and Detroit public schools. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public admin- istration from Wayne State Uni- versity in Detroit. He was granted a teaching fellowship at Kansas State University and later served as executive director of the Gov- ernment Research Council in Ba- ton Rouge, LA. He was appointed executive director of the Central Division of the Pennsylvania Economy League, Wilkes-Barre in 1959. He also served as the first executive director of the Economic Development Council of North- eastern Pennsylvania, retiring in 1985. He served on the original board of directors of the Luzerne County Community College. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Carmon. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, the former Ruby Steel; son, Mark R. Carmon, Lake Township; daughter, Susan. B. Carmon, Annandale, VA; sister, Sadie Johnstone, Lehigh Acres, FL.
