ae ne De J ® ) ® ) & a i dl ad _ The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 12, 1999 15 Sem students named AP scholars Thirty five students at Wyo- ming Seminary have been named as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board in recogni- tion of their exceptional achieve- ment on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations, Approximately 23 percent of graduating seniors in the United States have taken one or more AP exams; of the 635,000 students who took the May 1998 exams, only 13 percent nationwide were recognized as Advanced Place- ment Scholars. Students take AP exams after completing challenging college- level courses at their high schools. The examinations are graded on a 5-point scale (5 being the high- est); most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit for grades of 3 or higher. The College Board recognizes three levels of achievement — The ap Scholar with Distinction, the AP Scholar with Honor, and the AP Scholar. Tim Reddy of Shavertown and Patrick Rosenthal, Shavertown, Duke University were named as AP Scholars with Distinction, earning a grade of three or above on five or more AP exams, with an average grade of at least 3.5 Michael Messersmith of Dallas was named as AP Scholar with Honors, earning a grade of 3 or above on four or more exams, with an average grade of at least 3.25. Four current students from the Back Mountain were named as AP Scholars, completing three or more AP exams with grades of three or higher. They are Melissa Howell of Dallas, Timothy O'Donnell of Shavertown; Peter Casterline, Dallas, United States Military Academy; and Jennifer Stolarick, Trucksville, The Penn- sylvania State University. Earth Day at LJ Elementary The Lehman-Jackson Elementary PTA recently coordinated several Earth Day projects for the students in the elementary school. Kindergarten students and their “Study Buddies” from 5th grade decorated grocery bags donated from Mountain Fresh Supermarket in Pikes Creek. They added environmental pictures and slogans and returned them to the store for distribution on Earth Day.
