She was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas and its Altar and Rosary Society. Before retiring she worked as a seamstress at U.S.A. Garment Manufacturing, Larksville and Slocum Dress Co., Swoyersville. She was a member of West Side Seniors; Couples Club at Idetown Methodist Church; Nesbitt Auxil- iary, Back Mountain; American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Swoyersville; and International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Callaghan. Surviving are her daughters, Margaret A. FRANCIS KANE Monsignor Francis A. Kane, pastor emeritus of Immaculate Conception Church in West Pittston died May 5, 1999 at Holy Family Residence in Scranton fol- lowing an illness. Born April 6, 1909 in Moosic, he was a son of the late William and Ellen (Moran) Kane. His early education was in Moosic Borough School, St. Mary's Parochial School in Avoca and St. John’s High School in Pittston. He graduated from St. Bonaventure’s College in Olean, NY. He completed his studies for the priesthood at American Col- lege in Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained to the priesthood July 14, 1935 by the late Most Rev. Paulin LaDeuze, the Rector Magnificus of the American Col- lege of the University of Louvain in Belgium. His first assignment was as assistant pastor at Blessed Sac- rament in Wilkes-Barre, Holy Name in Swoyersville, Annuncia- tion in Williamsport and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Wilkes-Barre. He served as ad- ministrator at St. Patrick's in Wilkes-Barre and St. Mark's in the Inkerman section of Jenkins Township. In 1952, he was appointed the founding pastor of Gate of Heaven in Dallas. He was appointed in 1970 as pastor of Nativity of Our Lord in Scranton and in 1976, as pastor of Immaculate Conception in West Pittston, where he re- mained until his appointment as pastor emeritus on Sept. 4, 1985. He then served as chaplain for Holy Family Residence. He served as assistant super- intendent of schools and on the Board of Examiners of the Junior Clergy of the Diocese. On May 19, 1968, he was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope Paul VI. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Ambrose. Surviving are his brother, James, Clarks Summit; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand- nephews. Interment, Mount Olivet Cem- etery in the Carverton section of Kingston Township. He was a 1938 graduate of Le- hman High School and was a graduate of Villanova University, where he received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical en- gineering. He was employed asamechani- cal engineer at GE Ordinance Sys- tems, retiring in 1986 as an engi- neering manager with more than 30 years of service. ‘He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and also served dur- ing the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Pauline Washinko. Surviving are his second wife, the former Helen Bennett, whom he married June 2, 1996; son, Paul, Jr., Newport News, VA; daughters, Nina Skopic, Charlotte, NC; Alexandra Skopic Welch, Tolland, CT; and Natalie Skopic Bradford, Mansfield, MA and three grandchildren. She also originated the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Elk Lake. She was a member of Alderson United Methodsit Church She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Carpenter, and sisters, Clara Shupp, Jane Shannon and Agnes Pulsifer.
