Swetts, 77, of Leh- man Township, died April 22, 1999 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes- Barre. Born Sept. 11.1921, in Swoyersville, she was a daughter of the late Emory and Anna (Sodak) Yurko. . Sheattended Swoyersville High School and was a student pilot at Wyoming Aviation School in 1946. She was a World War Il veteran from 1943-1945, serving. in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in the SHAEF Headquarters under Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's com- mand. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at Lake Silkworth. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Cavuto and brothers, George and Emory. THOMAS MANIK “Thomas D. Manik, 62, of Harveys Lake, died April 23, 1999, ‘at ManorCare Health Services in Kingston. Born Jan. 24, 1937, 'in Larksville, he was a son of the late John A. and Anna (Krankota) Manik. He was a graduate of Larksville High School. He was a member of Our Lady af Victory Church at Harveys Lake. _ Before his retirement, he was employed as a mechanic for 30 years at Techneglas, Inc., in Jenkins Township. Born March 13, 1937, in Willkes-Barre, she was a daugh- ter of the late William F. and Mar- garet (Shea) Cunningham. She wads a 1954 graduate of E.L. Meyers High School in Wilkes- Barre. -She had been associated with several Wyoming Valley real es- tate agencies. HELEN MESSMER Helen (Polifka) Messmer, 79, of Harris Hill Road, in Shavertown, died April 19, 1999 at Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. Born June 12,/ 1919, in the Buttonwood section of Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Christine Polifka. She was a graduate of the former Hanover High School and resided in Kingston Township most of her life. She was a member of St. Nicho- las Church in Wilkes-Barre. She was employed as a seam- stress at various garment compa- nies in the Wyoming Valley. She was a member of the Interna- tional Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Michael; sisters, Irene Fetchik, Mary Kronick, Anna Polifka and Julie Dubick. Surviving are her husband, John with whom she celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary last May 17; son, Allan, Trucksville, Kingston Township; daughter, Marleen Shaver, Or- ange; five grandchildren; sisters, Catherine Gerrick and Verna Gerrick, both of Michigan, nieces and nephews. Walko, 37, of Trabuco Canyon, CA, formerly of Dallas, died April 18, 1999 as a result of injuries sustained in an automo- bile crash while on business in Puerto Rico. Born Aug. 17, 1961 in Wilkes- Barre, he was a son of Marilyn (Burke) Walko of Dallas, and the late Joseph J. Walko. He had attended Dallas schools and was a 1979 graduate of West Side Area Vocational-Technical School in Pringle. He had been employed for 11 years as a master mechanic and consultant in the electrical engi- neering department of Allergan Corp. in Irvine, CA. He had also owned and operated Silver Star Solutions Consulting in Trabuco Canyon since January. He was an avid fisherman and * a past member of Gate of Heaven Church in Dallas. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his brother, John M. Walko, Dallas; sisters, Marilyn Pasqualichio, Wilkes-Barre and Joey Lynn Walko, Dallas; aunts, uncles, two nieces and one nephew. Born in Larksville, she was a daughter of the late William and Theresa (Riley) Fisher. She re- sided in Dallas for the past 30 years. She was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wilkes-Barre. She was also a member of the Senior Citi- zens Share Program, the Bell Tele- phone Pioneers and the Railroad Auxiliary, and a past volunteer at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. She was employed by Bell Tele- phone in Wilkes-Barre until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, and brother William.
