6 ¢ Ci The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 23, 1998 11 Amesbury among teachers honored by Seminary Dallas Middle School teacher Norine Amesbury was one of 10 middle-school teachers from throughout the country honored by Wyoming Seminary as the school presented its third annual Middle School Teacher Excellence Awards. The award recognizes teachers who: e provide excellent preparation for college preparatory high-school success; e show a strong command of both subject matter and teaching techniques; e project enthusiasm and in- spire students to value and to love learning; * treat students with fairness and respect and demonstrate a personal concern and care for them. The award winners were cho- sen through a poll of students new to Wyoming Seminary, in their freshman through junior years, asking them to nominate an out- standing teacher who influenced them favorably through their middle-school years. Amesbury was nominated by her former student Christine Dempsey of Trucksville, a sopho- more at Wyoming Seminary. “What I learned in her class really prepared me for my future study,” she wrote in her nomination. “She was always on our cases, but in a good way.” “The middle-school years are particularly crucial to students’ future success,” noted Sem presi- dent H. Jeremy Packard. “We want torecognize excellent middle- school teachers and honor them for their work.” The teachers were honored at a dinner and reception at Wyoming Seminary’s Kingston campus. DMS honors outstanding students Recently an assembly was held at the Dallas Middle School to honor the outstanding academic students for the first marking period. Anthony Martinelli, Dallas Middle School principal, announced that 29 students achieved Honors With Distinction. To be eligible students must have a 3.8 to 4.0 average with no F or D grades. Absent from photo, Philip Miller (7). Misericordia offers new teacher scholarship College Misericordia is offering a new scholarship for teacher education students. The scholarship, called “School Partnership Scholarships,” will provide a total of $10,000 in financial aid to full-time college students interested in teaching in elementary schools. Students who receive the Misericordia scholarship will receive $2,500 per year for four years while they are enrolled in the College's teacher education program. Dallas launches water safety program Dallas School District suc- cessfully launched a Water Safety Program for third grade students, which began in Sep- tember, 1998. Students: re- ceived instruction in water safety and swimming skills at College Misericordia Pool as part of their Health and Physical Education class. Christina Neyman, Health Education teacher and a Red Cross Certi- fied Water Safety Instructor co- ordinated the program. Quali- fied College Misericordia stu- dents assisted with instruction "and safety. For the 1998-1999 school year, each student in the third grade will have the opportunity to learn water safety and to practice swim- ming skills for one quarter of the school year. Christina Neyman said, “The class is split into three levels of swimmers. Level | swimmers learn to swim and be comfort- able in the water. Level Il swim- mers learn and practice differ- ent strokes.
