2 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 16, 1998 CTCO to change area codes in Back Mountain Area code changes recently mandated by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) now affect the majority of Com- monwealth Telephone customers. Three new area codes have been introduced to eastern Pennsylva- nia; 570 in northeastern Pennsyl- vania and 267 and 484 in the southeastern part of the state. These changes will not affect local calling areas or telephone service rates. . The new area codes have been established to increase the quan- tity of telephone numbers in Penn- sylvania because the existing area codes of 717, 610 and 215 are near exhaustion. . On December 5, 1998, cus- tomers in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania changed their area code from 717 to 570. The PUC decided there would be a “geographic split” across the middle of the existing 717 area code, where all customers north of Dauphin County have received the new area code of 570 and all customers within Dauphin County and south have kept 717. - Alsoon December 5, 1998, new telephone lines in the 610 area code began receiving the 484 area code, and new lines in the 215 area code began receiving the 267 area-code. | Existing telephone numbers in the 610 and 215 area codes will not change. Commonwealth Telephone Company customers can direct area code questions to 1-888-729- 9977. Dialing instructions for the 717/570 area code split: e Customers calling within ei- ther the 717 or 570 area codes will continue to dial seven digits for local and toll calls. When placing calls between 717 and 570 or to other area codes in Pennsylvania or across the coun- try, customers must dial 1 + area code + seven digit telephone num- ber, even if the calls are within the customer's local calling areas. * Customers should now dial the new area code of 570. If they forget, those calls will continue to go through until April 7,” 1999. Beginning on April 8, 1999, call- ers must use the new area code of 570 or the call will not go through. Customers who do not dial the new area code after April 8, 1999 will hear a recorded message re- minding them that the 717 or 570 area code (preceded by 1) must be dialed to complete the call. * The area code change will not affect telephone service rates and customers’ local calling areas will remain the same even if they cross into the new area code. ~ » Wireless customers in north- eastern Pennsylvania have been granted a special exemption to the 717/570 area code split. Wire- less customers (cellular phones, papers, etc.) will have the option of keeping the 717 area code until April 4, 2000, even though all other numbers in that region will have been changed to the 570 area code.
