ELMA MAJOR Elma L. Major, 95, formerly of Dallas, died Dec. 11, 1998, at her home in Lemoyne. Born in Dallas Township, she was the daughter of the late Herbert J. and Maude Hoover Major. She was a graduate of Luzerne High School and Bloomsburg State Teachers College. She re- ceived her masters degree from the University of Michigan, be- coming a certified school psycholo- gist. She also engaged in gradu- ate studies at Columbia Univer- sity and Penn State University. She resided on Overbrook Road, Dallas Township for most of her life, before moving to Lemoyne in 1994 .She was a fifth grade teacher and a special education teacher in the Forty Fort school district. Later she taught at Bloomsubrg University. She started the first public school for Trainable Spe- cial Ecucation Children in Allen- town. Her career concluded as supervisor of special education classes in the Wilkes-Barre School District, retiring in 1967, after a span of 44 years. She was a member of the Hunts- ville Christian Church, where she served as Sunday School super- ! intendent, and was the first elder of the church. She was active in many interdenomination religious programs as well as being certi- fied to teach several courses in religious education. She was past president of Al- pha Chapter of Pennsylvania Con- ference of Exceptional Children; Bloomsburg; past presdient of Delta Chapter of Pennsylvania Conference of Exceptional Chil- dren; and past president of Lehigh Chapter of Pennsylvania Associa- tion for Mentally Retarded and Handicapped Children. She was preceded in death by her brother, Elmer Major and sis- ter Mildred Major. Surviving are foster sisters, Mary Ellen Williams, Lemoyne, with whom she resided; Patricia M. Wilson, New Cumberland and one nephew. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hunts- ville Cemetery, Sutton Road, Jack- son Township., with the Rev. David Mansfield, pastor of the Hunts- ville Christian Church, officiat- ing. A Memorial Service will be held in the Huntsville Christian Church at a time to be announced.
