MacDowell is | : nr | dedicated to the mission of the College, to the College’s sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy, | and to providing a high quality liberal arts education for its students. His plans for steady i | @ growth in the areas of enrollment, academic programs and facilities while bringing new direction and vision for the College will have a long-range impact both for the College's students and for the community. Dr. MacDowell joined Misericordia as its twelfth president on July 1, 1998. A native of Santa Monica, California, Dr. MacDowell previously served for nine years as vice president of institutional advancement at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Prior to joining Hartwick, he was president of the National Council on Economic Education in New York | ® City. The Council is a national organization dedicated to helping teachers and students better understand our economic system. Dr. MacDowell also has served as the executive director of the Illinois Council at Northern Illinois University where he was an associate professor of economics and education. He Dr Michasl A. MacDowell 4 ; ; : : we President, College Misericordia was an instructor in economics at Ball State University. There he also served as the co-director Jee of the Ball State Center for Economic Education. ) ® He has written extensively for education journals and publications of national education organizations, and has authored and co-authored many articles, several book chapters and a book titled Public Understanding of Economic Policy. Dr. MacDowell has received the Marvin Bower Medal in Economic Education and the John C. Schramm Leadership Award in Economic Education. He is an active member of a number of honorary professional and education organizations. Within the field of economics, he has served as a director of the Calvin K. Kazanjian Economics Foundation, the National Federation of Independent Business Foundation, and the National Council on Economic Education, Executive Committee, and the National ) @ Alumni Board, Trinity University. Dr. MacDowell holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Trinity University in Texas, a masters of arts degree in economics from North Texas State University, and a doctorate in social science from Ball State University in Indiana. Here in Pennsylvania, Dr. MacDowell and his wife Tina live in Dallas. They enjoy sailing on Harveys Lake. ) ® About the College ; i ollege Misericordia is a four-year, Catholic, co-educational liberal arts and professional ! studies college, founded in 1924 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy. The College offers = bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees in 26 majors, as well as 10 certification programs. In ) ©» : addition to its wide range of programs and schedules for both recent high school graduates and adult students, Misericordia offers many non-credit programs and activities for people of all ages. Misericordia has just completed the $10 million Campaign for College Misericordia, the largest fund-raising campaign in its history. The College is now constructing the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library, which will be open to the public, the Munson Center for Educational Technology, and ) 9 the Banks Center for Student Life. All these improvements, as well as an increase to the ~ College’s endowment, are funded through the successful Campaign for College Misericordia, which was completed one year ahead of schedule.
