The victory wrapped up the Wyoming Valley Conference Division II champion- ship for the Mountaineers. - Quarterback Chuck Suppon and backup tailback Cory Gallant also scored on short runs, and fullback Matt Acri added a 91- yard scoring gallop to put the game way out of the Mohawks’ reach. Matt Douglas hit all the point-after kicks. Acri gained a total of 142 yards on seven carries, Jackson ran 27 times for 76 yards and Gallant ended with four runs for 31 yards. Suppon was 3-for-5 in the air for 66 yards, including a 55-yard completion to Chris Tucker. Lehman 40, Crestwood 6 Tuning up for the Old Shoe Game, Lehman gave up a first- quarter touchdown, but that was all. Rich Patton ran for touch- downs on 2, 9, 2 and 8 yards to lead the Black Knights’ scoring. Travis McRoy scampered 87-yards for a score, and Floyd McRoy took it in from 2 yards out. Lehman more than doubled the Comets (1-6 WVC, 1-8 overall) in first downs, 27 to 13 and gained a monstrous 428 yards on the ground. Quarterback D.J. Kapson was 5-for-12 in the air for 121 yards. Patton ended the day with 108 yards on 16 carries, and Travis McRoy went 84 yards on 13 car- ries. Lehman is now in a three-way tie for second place in Division II, with a 5-2 conference record. On paper, the other two teams, Hanover and Wyoming Area, have easier games this week, while the Knights will travel to Dallas. CROSS COUNTRY Joe Maskalis led the Back Mountain contingent in the Dis- trict 2 Boys Cross Country Cham- pionships Oct. 28. He and team- mate Jason Lyons qualified torun in the state meet, which will be held Nov. 7 at Penn State Univer- sity. Matt Schweitzer was the only qualifier from Dallas. VOLLEYBALL Lehman 2, GAR 0 Faith O'Dell led the Knights with 12 service points, nine as- sists, eight kills and four aces, as Lehman rolled 15-2, 15-6. Rachel Bouthot had five service points, Melanie Steele had three kills and an ace, and Becky Kaufman chipped in three kills and an ace. Nanticoke 2, Dallas 0 The Mounts kept it close in the first game before losing 15-12, then dropped the second 15-2. Tara Holly had seven Kills and three aces and Jacey Peterson had four service points and three kills. Mounts blast past Montrose It seemed like a struggle, but in the end Dallas put away Montrose 4-1 in a first round playoff game Friday. Andrew George opened the scoring early in the match off a corner kick from Mike Cleary. About 20 minutes later, Jesse Williams took another Cleary corner and put it in the goal. Rich Samanas headed in the Mounts’ third goal of the first half, and Samanas fed Justin Hoover with seconds to go in the game for the final Dallas score. The Mounts shot three times as often as the Meteors, 18 to 6, and had 11 corners to one. Nate Hoffman saved three shots in goal. Sting wins U-10 girls tournament Back Mountain “Sting” recently won the U-10 girls Campbelltown- Palmyra Soccer Blast Tournament. In four games the “Sting” scored 15 goals and had none scored against them. Send your sports reports to the Post Matthew Schweitzer achieved a per- sonal goal in the District 2 high school cross country championship. By finish- ing 20th out of 193 runners, he qualified for the state meet, to be held Nov. 7 at Penn State University. This was only Matthew's second sea- son in cross country. A junior, he be- came interested in running last fall. “Swim coach Matt Stretanski had us running in pre-season to get in shape for swimming,” he said. “The cross country guys saw me running and told me to come out for the team.” While he likes swimming best, he enjoyed running, but his season last year was cut short when he developed a stress fracture in his lower leg. He stayed in shape by swimming until being al- lowed to run again this spring. states. View Matt, a junior, placed first in the district swim meet and participated in the state meet in February. He said the experience will help “calm the jitters” when he gets to the state cross country meet. Reggie Thomas, the Dallas cross country coach, was not surprised by Matt's performance. “I expected him to place some- where between 19th and 24th,” Tho- mas said. “He had a great season, taking first or second place in all our meets except one.” Matthew's goals for the remainder of the year include having a good swim season and winning a medal at “I'd also like to qualify for states in track. Knights top Trail, play for title The Lake-Lehman Knights got started early when Janelle Perlis powered a shot into the goal after only minute and a half of play, but Lackawanna Trail proved they're no pushover by responding with a goal and stopping the Knights for the rest of the half. A tightly defensed second half yielded one more goal for Lehman and none for Trail, ending the Lions’ season. Melissa DeCesaris, who passed to Perlis for the first goal, scored the second on a feed from Leighann Isaac, and the Lehman defense did the rest of the work. Lehman shot 22 times and had nine corners. Colby Smith was called on to make only one save. Lehman (19-2) meets Crestwood (20-1) today (Nov. 4) at Lackawanna County Stadium t decide the District 2, Class AA championship. Lehman handed the Comets their only loss this season. The trophy originally was presented to the team with the best record. Only later, particu- larly after school consolidation, did a single game determine the holder of the Old Shoe trophy. There have been three ties, in 1956, 1982 and 1988. More than half the time, the losing team has not scored, and there was a streak of eight shutouts from 1989 to 1996. Three games have been decided by a single point; 1953, 1977 and 1980. The largest win- ning margin was a 50-0 victory by Dallas in 1972. In the 13 years during which three teams played, Dallas won only once. Since then, Dallas has won 29 times, Lehman seven.
