6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 4, 1998 Chicory House dance features Appalachian-style string band They'll be heating the hall with hot southern tunes at the Chicory House Contra Dance on Saturday Nov. 14. “Hobo Pie,” a four-per- son string band from the Phila- delphia area, plays a wide-rang- ing repertoire of traditional Appa- lachian tunes. This lively music will accompany a program of ap- propriately southern-flavored dances: contras, squares and tra- ditional “running sets.” The Chicory House and the Folklore Society will co-sponsor the New England Contra dance starting at 8 p.m. at St. Therese’s Church on: Pioneer Ave. Shavertown. “Hobo Pie” consists of Carl Baron, on fiddle, banjo, and banjo- guitar, Barbara Johnson playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo- guitar, and uke, Ray Frick on banjo and banjo-uke, and Bob Woodcock, guitar, autoharp, man- dolin and banjo. The band’s name comes from a campfire cooking utensil which consists of a two-piece cast iron pan with long handles held over an open fire to cook. A band member used them while camp- ing at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia and was introduced to the name. Ridge Kennedy will teach and call the dances. He says that “If you can walk, you can dance!” and helps newcomers discover how easy it is to enjoy traditional American dancing. Contra dancing is a multi-gen- erational community dance that is aerobic, fun, and sociable. No partner or previous dance experi- ence is necessary. The Chicory house is an all- volunteer non-profit coffeehouse, sponsoring folk music and dance in the Wyoming Valley. Admis- sion to the dance is S6 for adults and S15 for families. Dancers are asked to wear soft-soled shoes and to bring a snack to share at intermission. Further informa- tion is available at 333-4007.
