The play evolved from a one-act musical first presented at the Camp Taminent resort in the Poconos in 1958. The Broadway version began a long and successful run in 1959 with newcomer Carol Burnett in the lead. | The story, based upon the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” concerns a mythical kingdom where a young prince seeks a bride to make his prin- cess. When he falls in love with a shy maiden, his overbearing mother tries to subvert the relationship. There are many comical twists and turns before the royal couple finds happiness ever after.
