But there is one dangerous element that many people don't know about or don't take seriously, radon. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that comes from the radioactive decay of uranium. Uranium ' deposits are found in the soil, and as the element de- cays; radon gas seeps from the ground into homes and other + structures through cracks in their foundations. Being a carcinogen, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, next to smoking. For non- smokers, it is the leading cause. The gas clings to particles in the air, and when it is breathed in, confinues to decay in the lungs, emitting radiation. The effects of radon occur over an extended period of time, de- pending on the ventilation of the affected area, and amount of ex- posure to'that area. If radon gas is such a health risk, who's educating the public aboutit? The Lake-Lehman Learn ‘N Serve Chemistry students are. This program demonstrates and . teaches the fifth-grade students at Lehman-Jackson and Lake- Noxen elementary schools. Supported by radon grant funds, Learn ‘N Serve provides a service to the community through education. Learn ‘N Serve has been in existence for three years, and in that time span, participation is four times -that of the original group. Just last year, it began to em- phasize radon awareness and education. What the Learn ‘N Serve students do is teach the dangers of radon, and distribute test kits (which can also be pur- chased at local hardware stores). When the test results come back, the results are mapped out across the region, and for those homes. with elevated levels of radon, pre- vention methods are worked out with parents. “I hope that our school com- munity will become more consci- entious about radon and that they will join in our efforts to evaluate homes within our community,” Mrs. Keen said. : The program was held in con- junction with National Radon Ac- tion Week, which was observed Oct. 18-24. “The Big Book of Flower Gardening’/A Time-Life Book “Submarines” by Timothy L.
