Although the Kuehns are Chris- tians, not Muslims, they enjoy celebrating religious holidays with their Omani friends. Eid Al-Fitr celebrates the close of Ramadhan, a month of fasting. Every Muslim should make a pilgrimage to Mecca at some time in his or her life and Eid Al-Adha, the other religious holiday, celebrates the comple- tion of this pilgrimage. The Mus- lims have been celebrating these holidays in the same way far hun- dreds of years. Lena loves going with her family to visit her friends during the holidays to help them slaughter and prepare the ani- mals they eat during the celebra- -tion. “When we go and visit them it is more like we are one of them versus just outsiders looking in,” Lena says, “It has been so inter- esting to see how the people still gather in the center of the villages and dance because of this joyous celebration.” Despite the difference between the cultures of Oman and the United States, the Kuehrs have . kept some of their own Sulipre % especially that rooted in theirfaith; which is a much deeper founda-:. tion than their nationality}.~ “Their: daily life still involves a time of.» family devotions.
