The check included over $1,300 in funds raised by nine Wyoming Valley Lutheran congregations along with $2,000 in matching funds from Lutheran Brotherhood. Funds will be used by the Red Cross to replenish funds used for the Lake Carey tornado victims. Participating congregations included St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Shavertown. | , RALPH SANDS Ralph M. Sands, 83, of West Eighth Street, Carverton, died Oct. 17, 1998, at Wilkes-Barre Gen- eral Hospital. Born in West Wyoming, he was the son of the late Herman and Ida Sands. He was a lifelong resident of the Carverton, Kingston Township area. A graduate of Kingston Town- ship High School, he also attended Penn State University. He was a dairy farmer most of his life, and showed dairy cattle for 50 years at various fairs. He was a Pennsylvania Judge of Dairy Cattle. He was a member of the Co- lumbia and Luzerne County Dairy Club, the Pennsylvania Holstein Association and the National Hol- stein Association. He was inducted into the Dairy Hall of Fame at Penn State University, National Dairy Shrine. He served as live- stock superintendent of the Luzerne County Fair and served on its board of directors. He was a past supervisor of Kingston Township. He was a member of the Wyo- ming United Methodist Church, its choir, past church trustee and past president of the Live Wire Class. He was past master of Moun- tain Grange 567; past master and 50-year member of Wyoming Lodge 468 F&M; Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg; Irem' Temple and past president of the Irem Temple Chanters. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Isobel Sweitzer, in 1971. Surviving are his wife of 24 years, the former Marion E. Bayley; daughter, Harriet Sands, West Wyoming; stepdaughters, Elizabeth Dupcavitch, West Pittston; Susan Brooks, India- napolis, Ind.; brother, James Sands, Tunkhannock; two grand- daughters; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 from the Wyoming United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Shambora, his pastor, officiating. - Interment will be in Wyoming Cemetery. Born April 22, 1919 in the But- tonwood section of Hanover Town- ship, she was a daughter of the late James J. and and Margaret McGowan Convery. She attended Wilkes-Barre schools and was a 1935 graduate of Plymouth High School. She was also a graduate of College Misericordia, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree. She was earlier employed as school teacher at St. Mary's School, Wilkes-Barre. She was later employed in the treasurer's office at College Misericordia and before retiring in 1986, she was employed as the parish secretary at Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake. She was also a member of the College Misericordia Alumni As- sociation and the Bloomer Girls, and had served as past president of St. Ann's Mothers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Israel and sis- ter, Ruth Convery and Honora Convery.
