After finishing in second place with a 16-4 record during the regular season, Back Mountain beat Hazleton 8-2 in the first play- off round before losing to Ply- mouth-Grontkowski 11-4 Mon- day night. First-year head coach Bob Ashworth’s team would have needed three wins this week to advance to the regional tourna- “ment. “I'm very proud of our guys,” said Ashworth. “We were second during the regular season and we've got third place in the play- offs. That's better than a lot of people thought we'd do.” Don’t count Ashworth among those doubters. After he and as- sistant coach Ryan Flynn, who both serve as assistant coaches at Dallas High School, were coaxed into taking the Legion job by Dal- las head coach John Bittner, his optimism took over. “I thought we had a good club,” said Ashworth. “I thought we could make the playoffs and chal- lenge for the championship. We were only one game out of first place. It is credit to the players what we were able to accomplish this season.” While baseball is a team game and the squad has enjoyed suc- cess, Back Mountain has also had tremendous success on an indi- vidual basis. Pitcher John Habrack and shortstop Chad Sorber have been selected to par- ticipate in the prestigious East- West game, Sunday, July 26 in Harrisburg. “It is an honor for Chad and John to be chosen for the all-star game,” said Ashworth. “I've fol- lowed them very closely through- out the selection process. It's a thrill for me to be a part of it.? Habrack and Sorber are two of just four local players to be named Seniors crush Horlacher in title game Back Mountain dominated Bob Horlacher Sunday evening to capture the Dis- trict 16 Senior League Base- ball championship. The score was 12-1, and the game was every bit that lopsided, as Mike Domzalski gave up only one hit in a game called after five innings because of the 10- run rule. Horlacher hurt its own cause by committing five er- rors, adding fire to a Back Mountain offensive attack that brought in six runs in the second inning and three each in the fourth and fifth. John Nackley went 4-for-4, Josh Katyl was 3-for-4 and Mike Domzalski and J.B. Bucha each went 2-for-2 for Back Mountain. Teammate Gregg Woronko also reached the final cut. “We had five local players make the All- East game and three of them were from our team,” explained Ashworth. “That says something about the talent level on this squad.” Habrack, a 16-year-old lefty, has developed into one of the top hurlers in the area in just his first season as a pitcher. “We needed some pitching during the high school season and he gave it a shot,” said Ashworth. “He throws hard and has good movement on his fastball. I think he is the best pitcher in the league.” Sorber, the team’s shortstop, will play second base in the East- West game. “Chad has been a good leadoff hitter for us,” said Ashworth. “He's a switch-hitter and he uses his speed, but his strength is his defense and his throwing arm.” Woronko joined Habrack on the mound to provide the locals with a tough one-two punch, but he advanced in the All-Star process as a first-baseman. “Gregg is a tough out,” said Ashworth. “He has a quick bat and good power.” While Habrack, Sorber and Woronko were the standouts, they See LEGION, pg 10 John Habrack pitched a three- hitter in the first playoff game: He will play in the state all- Siar, game.
