Charlie was a resident of Dallas for five years where he was the Director of Con- tinuing Education at Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus. He has since gone on to be an outdoor writer and has written several books on fly fishing including: Meeting and Fishing the Hatches, Great Rivers, Great Hatches, Fly Fishing Small Stream, Pennsylva- nia Trout Streams and Their Hatches, Paterns, Hatches, Tacticts and Trout, and his latest book Mid-Atlantic Trout Streams and Their Hatches in which Ron Payne the owner of Back Moun- tain Outfitters is featured on the cover. Charlie Meck's book sales are well over 100,000 copies and he is a regular contributor to: Pennsylvania Angler, Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide, Virtual Fly Shop on the internet and Fly Fishing Magazine. Ce Po: Bn STEPHANIE FETT John Dawe is headed for Governor's school John Dawe, son of William and Dorothy Dawe, of Lehman has been selected to attend the Penn- sylvania Governor's School for Teaching (PGST) at Millersville University, July 5 to Aug. 8. PGST is the first and only school of its kind in the nation. The five-week long residential program, sponsored by the Penn- sylvania Department of Educa- tion, is designed for gifted and talented high school students who are interested in teaching as a career. This year, 64 students were selected competitively from 300 applicants representing the 29 Pennsylvania State Intermediate Units. J POST PHOTO/KYLIE SHAFFERKOETTER Kiwanis Club learns about BMT Trail The Dallas Kiwanis Club learned about the Anthracite Scenic Trails Association (ASTA) Rails to Trails project May 20. At a dinner held at the Checkerboard Inn on Carverton Rd., Joseph Persico of Shavertown, explained ASTA'’s plan to convert the old Lehigh Valley Railroad beds into walking, running and biking trails for the community to enjoy. Persicd, who is campaign chairman, said ASTA needs $50,000 to $100,000 to finish the first two-mile segment that begins in Luzerne. He mentioned that the community can support the trail by purchasing a foot or two of the trail. “We will maintain a registry with everyone’s name in it indicating who participated,” Persico told the group of 30 people. Persico said ASTA is open to any questions, advice or help the Kiwanis would like to give. Weiss to attend 'Presidential Classroom’ Kate Weiss, a student at Dallas High School will travel to our nation’s capital as a participant in Presidential Classroom, America’s premier civic education program. The program will take place June 27 to July 5. Joining hundreds of high school students from across the country and abroad, Kate will take part in seminars presented by leaders representing each branch of gov- ernment, the military, media and lobbying organizations. Students are also scheduled for a private tour of the White House, appoint- ments with their Senators’ and Representatives’ offices and a visit to a foreign embassy.
