The game commission gets its revenue from the sale of hunting licenses and permits, cut timber, and literature about animals. But it also gets aid from the government by way of an excise tax imposed on ammunition and guns. This tax money goes first to the federal government and then is reallocated to the states based on an equa- tion. It is the Federal Aid Supervisor's job to handle “these funds. "The Dallas office also works hard to educate the public about wildlife. “Our officers do programs in schools and classrooms,” Weaver explained. The problem is usually people.” Jack Weaver Information and Education Supervisor PA Game Commission, NE Region up displays at the Bloomsburg Fair and also at some sports shows. Game commission officers come from all different backgrounds. “Many people have college degrees. We have our own training school that’s part of the Harrisburg complex,” Weaver said. The nine-month program is run every two to three years and only 25 applicants are taken. Weaver said they receive well over 2,000 applicants. Maintaining the balance Weaver talked about is not an easy task for the game commission. The increased number of people moving to rural areas does not make the job any easier. One of the big issues facing the organization today is development of the Poconos. “Pennsylvania has been traditionally rural,” Weaver said. “In the Poconos we're getting a lot of people with no rural background. Running into bears creates a lot of conflict.” As a result, not all the changes Weaver has seen are positive. “Wild pheasant populations are his- tory,” he said. “The habitats have changed.
