OBITUARIES HAROLD SHERMAN Harold : Sherman, 73, of -Sarasota, FL, formerly of Wilkes- Barre and Media died Apr. 14 at his home. He was the son of the late Al and Helen Sherman. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving as a medic in Europe. He was a graduate of Antioch College, and earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan. He was continuously active in the Unitarian-Universalist Church everywhere he lived. He was preceded in death by his son, Alan. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Sulochana; brothers, Marvin, San Jose, CA; and Aaron of Great Neck, NY; sons Roger, Boise, ID; Mark, Santa Barbara, CA; daughters, Shelley, St. Paul, MN; Diane Sherman, Dallas; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Unitarian-Universalist Church of Sarasota, April 18. RAYMOND KERN Raymond L. Kern, Sr., of Mill St., Dallas, died April 26, 1998 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospi- tal. Born at Harveys Lake, he was the son of the late Edwin and Marion Kern. He was a 1953 graduate of Le- hman High School and served in the U.S. Army: He recently retired from owner- ship of Kern Brothers Beverage Distributors in Dallas after 40 years. She was employed as an el- ementary teacher for the Larksville schools and for the Nanticoke and Shickshinny Elementary schools. She was also a teacher for the Luzerne County School of Special Education in Hazleton. She was a member of the Penn- sylvania State Education Asso- ciation. She was also a member of the Plymouth Business and Pro- fessional Women’s Club and was named Woman of the Year in 1983. Born in Dallas Township, March 29, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Grier and Virginia Martin Davis. She resided in Sweet Valley for the last 22 years. Prior to retiring, she operated the snack bar at the former Hanson's Bowling Alley, Dallas and was also employed by Gen- eral Cigar Co., Kingston. She attended the Emmanuel Assembly of God Church, Harveys Lake, and assisted with its bus ministry. She was also a youth leader for the local branch of the Word of Life Youth Fellowship, Schroon Lake, NY. She and her husband, Stephen J. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Hannah M. Tuck Snyder. Before she retired in 1976, she was employed as a housekeeper for state Sen. T. Newell Wood of Harveys Lake for 20 years. She was a former member of Parsons Baptist Church, Parsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry S. Jones Sr.; son, Harry S. Jones, Jr.; and 12 brothers and sisters. Surviving are a son, Robert J. Jones, Warminster; six grandchil- dren; 10 great-grandchildren. Watkins, 96, former - resident of Dallas and Wyoming died April 24, 1998 at Manor Care Health Services, Kingston. Born in Scranton, March 22, 1902, he was the son of the late William E. and Sara Jane Mascali Watkins. He was employed for many years in the mining industry. He was emloyed by Glen Alden Coal Co. as a surveyor, superinten- dent and licensed mining engi- neer. He was also a superinten- dent at Maltby Coal Co. Swoyersville; and Kehoe-Berg Coal Co., Exeter, and president of Wat- Rap Coal Co., Junedale. After retiring from mining in- dustry, he was a consultant to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in planning and developing the route of the Cross-Valley Express- way. He was a member of Wyoming Presbyterian Church and past president of the Wyoming Businessmen’s Club. He was a member of the Garden Rod and Gun Club and the Grouse Soci- ety. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Sun- day; sisters, Ethel Weber and Frieda Watkins.
