Deadline is Friday at 3 p.m. Bringin' acoustic blues to the Chicory House Two great acoustic blues art- ists - Mary Flower and Catfish Hodge - share the stage in a double bill at the Chicory House Fri., March 27 at 8 p.m. Catfish Hodge's blues career has spanned almost three de- cades, and he’s still going strong. He has 22 albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of origi- nal material. His latest 1997 re- lease “Bare Necessities” finds him in a solo ‘acoustic setting with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads. This Detroit-bred artist has been called by the Michigan me- dia “one of the greatest blues gui- tarists and composers Michigan's ever produced...on a scale with Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. Critics often struggle to classify his brand of blues, finding strains of Delta jazz, southern rock and rhythm and blues. “It’s not just one shade of blues...It’s a rainbow of them. He knows the color scheme like the back of his hand The Washington Post. Coloradoan Mary Flower has been playing the blues since the 70s and teaching blues at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia since 1993. Her resonant, sultry voice and con- summate fingerstyle and slide guitar playing has prompted Acoustic Guitar magazine to dub her “one of the best blues-based singer-songwriters working to- day.” The non-profit volunteer-run Chicory House presents a range of acoustic folk music from blues to bluegrass, Celtic to Cajun, jazz to swing. The coffeehouse-style con- certs are held in the community room of St. Stephen’s Church, 35 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre.. The Chicory House is not affiliated with St. Stephen’s.
