The fourth quarter was back and forth until Jared Daniels hit one of two at the free throw line which proved to be the difference and a 23-22 Franklin First Savings win. Franklin First was led by Brendan Delaney 8 points, Joshua Reese, Kevin Hosseni, Jesse Reese, all with 4 points and Jared Daniels with 3 points. Video's points with Thomas ending the night with 12 and Schmidt five. SEMI-FINALS 7 - 8 Grade Team #1 43 - Team #2 34 Carla Blase was on fire with a game high 22 points including 7- of-7 from the line as Team #1 ousted Team #2 from advancing. After capturing a 20-17 lead at the half, Team #2’s demise came in the third period as they were held to just two points allowing team #1 one to take the lead for good. It was neck and neck in the final stanza but Team #2 was unable to close the gap sending - Team #1 to the finals. Team #4 22 - Team #3 21 Team #4 turned around a 18- 15 defecit entering the final pe- riod to take a 22-21 victory and advance to the finals. Jill Youngblood put Team #3 up early with 8 first half points to give her squad a 14-9 lead at the half. Team #4's defense turned up the heat in the second half allowing “ Team #3 just two points from the field. Amanda Donahue displayed - her mastery of foul shooting, con- verting 7-of-8 from the line in- cluding five points in the second half to keep her squad in the hunt. Despite being held silent in the first quarter Team#4 chipped away at the early defecit in the final three periods thanks to steady offense by nancy Levinson with a team high 9 points, Brandy Rickaby with 8 and Jaimie Sickler with 5. FINALS Team #4 38 - Team #1 36 Team #4 benefitted from hav- ing three players score in the double digits to take the 7 and 8th grade championship over Team #1 38-36. Team #4’s Nancy Levinson led her team with 13 points followed by Brandy Rickaby with 12 and Jaimie Sickler with ' 11. Susan Banks and Jen Lewis provided outstanding defense for the victors. For your information, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission voted at its January meeting (PFBC Press Release 98-S-02) to move forward with a plan to require all operators of personal watercraft obtain and carry a boating safety education certificate in order to legally operate. This would apply to all persons regardless of age. Certificates are issued upon successful completion of an approved boating safety course. From 7-8 p.m. registration will be held for all children age six and older who wish to participate in T-ball, major and minor league baseball, major and minor league softball and all teen programs. All prospective players should bring in their Social Security numbers to registration. Any child who has not previously participated in Back Mountain Baseball and Softball should bring his or her birth certificate to registration as proof of age. The cost of registration is $35 for the first child in a family, $15 for the second child and $10 for each additional child. All baseball and softball managers for the 1998 season will be announced at the general meeting which is schduled to begin at 8 p.m. Freedom wins U-10 tournament The Freedom U-10 Soccer team recently won the Wyoming Valley Sports Dome Tournament. T.G.I.F.’s Herb Bressler scored 10 of his game- high 39 points in the quarter to keep the game close. Mellon led T.G.I.F. 17-12 at quarter's end. Mellon continued their scoring attack in the second quarter with Curtis Keiper, Mark and George leading the way. Mellon outscored T.G.LF. 14-10 to take a 31-22 halftime lead. Mellon continued to score at will in the third quar- ter, when disaster struck, Mellon's Andrew George picked up his fourth foul and on the same play was assessed a technical foul. George was out of the game with his fifth foul. T.G.L.F. took advan- tage of Mellon’s big man on the bench and narrowed Mellon's lead to 41-35 at the end of the third quarter. T.G.L.F. outscored Mellon 20-10 in the final quarter to win the game. In the fourth quarter T.G.I.LF. was 10 of 14 on the char- ity stripe. T.G.I.F.’s offense was led by Bressler with 39 points, followed by Donny Murray with 8 points and Ryan Love with 4 points. Mellon’s offense was led by Andrew George with 17 points, followed by Matt Mark with 11 points and Todd Kerestes with 10 points. SEMI-FINALS T.G.l. Fridays 51 - Dr. Jack Ellis 46 Both teams came out shooting in the first quarter, with Dr. Jack Ellis’s Mike Dombroski and An- drew Dale leading the scoring at- tack for their team, while T.G.I.F.’s Herb Bressler and Donny Murray provided their teams’ scoring punch. At the end of the first quarter T.G.LF. held a two-point lead at 18-16. The second quar- ter was a carbon copy of the first with Dr. Jack outscoring T.G.L.F. 17-16 to narrow T.G.L.F. lead at halftime to 34-33. Mike Dombroski, Andrew Dale and Pe- ter Miller put on a fine display of shooting in the second quarter for their team, however T.G.1.F. coun- tered with a scoring drive of their own, with Donny Murray scoring 9 points in the quarter. Both teams slowed the pace in the third quarter, with Dr. Jack Ellis outscoring T.G.L.F. 5-4 in a very defensive quarter. At the end of - the third quarter it was all knot- ted up at 38 apiece. Herb Bressler took control in the final quarter and scored 8 points of his game high 22 to seal the win for T.G.I.F. T.G.1.F’'s offense was led by Bressler with 22 points, followed by Murray with 17 points and Josh Rice with 5 points. Dr. Jack Ellis’ offense was led by Dombroski with 19 points, followed by Dale with 13 points and Miller with 6 points. Mellon Bank 68 - Quality Collision 40 Mellon Bank came out on fire in the first quarter, and outscored Quality Collision 21-10. Matt Mark, Andrew George, and Ryan Gryskievicz provided their team’s scoring punch, while Quality Collison’s John Simonitis kept his team in the hunt by scoring 8 points in the quarter. The teams traded baskets in the second quar- ter, with each team scoring 13 - points. Quality Collision’s Jordy Spencer, Angelo Recchia and Chris Arnaud scored key baskets while. George, Mark and Gryskievicz continued to provide Mellon Bank with a solid offense. At halftime it was 34-23 in favor of Mellon Bank. Mellon outscored Quality 13-8 in the third quarter, to increase their lead to 47-31. Mellon continued the scoring at- tack in the fourth quarter, with Andrew George, Todd Kerestes and Brian Dempsey leading the way. Mellon Bank's offense was led by Andrew George with a game high 25 points, followed by Matt Mark with 19 points and Gryskievicz with 17 points. Qual- ity Collision’s offense was led by Simonitis with 22 points, foillowed by Jordy Spencer with 6 points and Kevin Arnaud with 5 points.
