12 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, February 11, 1998 An Performance to celebrate Black History Month Feb. 16 In celebration of Black History Month, Penn State Wilkes-Barre will present The NOMMO Perform- ing Arts Company on Mon., Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in Hayfield House. The program is sponsored by the Campus Environment Team as part of its Diversity Series and is free and open to the public. The NOMMO Players, made up of more than 30 students at Penn State's University Park campus, focuses on integrating the three art forms, dance, theater and mu- sic into a unified experience that reflects the culture and traditions of Africans and African-Americans. The material, both traditional and original, that is performed by the company is selected with the in- tent of educating and informing. In their concerts, the actors, dancers, singers and musicians provide their audiences with im- ages from traditional African and contemporary African-American life. These concerts, while classi- fied as “entertainment” will, in fact, be part of NOMMO's basic philo- sophical push. The name NOMMO was chosen because it implies more than en- tertainment. Taken from Kiswahili, the word is difficult to translate into English but the concept is that of a seed. The word (play, song, dance, etc.) is a seed planted through the senses into the mind of the obsever/participant. That observer /participant then has the responsibility of nourishing the seed and growing in the knowlege of African and African-American culture. The company performs regularly for many Penn State campus ac- tivities, including Homecoming, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemo- ration programs, “A Touch of Af- rica” and hosts the Penn State Kwanzaa celebration. NOMMO also hosts its own annual concert and offers workshops, master classes, residencies and perfor- mances at colleges and universi- ties across the country. For more information on the NOMMO Players performance or other Diversity Series programs, call the campus at 675-9266. Coates Reproeloplics wins Dock to Stock’ award The closing month of 1997 will be remembered with gratification by all at Coates Reprographics Inc. in Dallas. During December, the company was recognized in- dependently by two organizations for the quality of its business ac- tivities. In addition to attaining the ISO9002 registration through the British Standards Institution, CRI was presented with a ‘Dock to Stock Award’ by one of their long standing OEM customers, Moore Document Automation Systems. For years the quality manage- ment systems at CRI had been built around the ISO9001 proce- dures established in 1990 at Coates Electrographics, their sis- ter facility in England. Although CRI has not experi- enced significant market pressure to possess a “quality badge”, the employees had long appreciated the benefits that a documented quality, management system brings to its operations, and sub- sequently to its customers, both internal and external. In order to maintain competi- tive advantage and increase mar- keting and sales opportunities, it was decided to obtain registration to ISO9002, the international standard for quality systems that is recognized worldwide. The scope of this registration at CRI covers its sales, purchas- ing, production and customer ser- vice processes. This quality man- agement system provides the ba- sic tools for CRI to fulfill its com- mitment to meet the ever chang- ing needs of its customers through continuous improvement of its products, service and technical support. Quality improvement within the company has long been driven from the top by group Managing Director, Mike Cockett, and has received continued support at all levels of the organization. The co- ordinating of ISO9002 activities at CRI was undertaken by the Technical Manager, Tony Nickalls. On completion of this exercise he remarked that “It was hard work, but it has helped us in ways too numerous to mention. Things we thought we were doing before- hand, we are now actually doing”. Sales Co-ordinator, Tom Brody, explained - “At first I thought it was just a lot of hard work, but now we can trace what we've done and why we've done it. We are not just doing things by default”. Jim Collins, Financial Control- ler for CRI, summed up his thoughts of the ISO9002 system. “It provides the discipline needed for ongoing operating plans and keeps you on track." An operator in CRIs filling and packing department, he reflected that the process of formalising practices within the 1SO9002 sytem “was not earth shattering, but it allows us to focus more on keeping up our operating speeds, without losing accuracy”. He con- cluded that the ISO9002 system “can only do good”.
