Walters, a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War, visited Lehman Jackson Elementary School. Mrs. Nancy Walters, invited her father-in-law to speak to the four sections ‘of fourth grade. Mr. Walters was a radioman on the cruiser, Raleigh CL7, stationed at Pearl Harbor. He explained in detail and answer session followed. After the discussion, the students went to Miss Kendra Cosgrove’s class and viewed some slides taken of her visit to Pearl Harbor. Teachers and students alike felt a renewal of patriotism after the program. GOH earns two awards on mission day A Pontifical Mass was held October 19, in Cathedral of St. Peter, Scranton, to celebrate World Mission Sunday. Gate of Heaven School was honored to receive two awards. The first award was received for “Hands Together in Mission Education.” This award is given to elementary school programs that have used three or more Holy Childhood mission education programs in achieving their total contributions for the year. The second award was received for Highest Total Sharing. This award is given to the three highest sharing schools in the diocese. Our school was represented by eighth grade students Daniel Engler and Colin Donnelly. Dan rec8ived the awards on behalf of the school from Most Reverend James Timlin; Colin took part in the Liturgy by reading a General Intercession. Cathy Jones gets poetry published Cathy Lee Jones of Sweet Valley, has just had original poetry published in the “Best Poems of 1997", a treasury of today’s poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry. Red Cross to hold lifeguard training The Wyoming Valley Chapter, American Red Cross, will be conduct- = ing a Lifeguarding Review course, for those who took Lifeguarding in 1995.
